INCREASE PURSES AT PIMLICO Raise Overnight Events From 00 to 00 Outlay of 3,000 More Than Last Year. BOWIE, Md., April 11. It begins to look as if Maryland racing will soon regain its place at the top of the heap, for the Maryland Jockey Club, through secretary Matthias Li. Daiger, today announced that the minimum purse would be 00 for the twelve-day racing period, beginning Monday, April 29. The Southern Maryland Agricultural Association, which is conducting this meeting, took the first step to increase the purses, shoving their overnights from 00 to 00. The latter sum will be the minimum during the Harford Agricultural and Breeders Associations twelve-day meeting which pens at 2:30 p. m. Monday at Havre de Grace. Daiger, in discussing the increased purses for Pimlico, said: "The excellent meeting being staged at Bowie, despite the rough weather encountered, causes the Maryland Jockey Club officials to think that Maryland racing is on its way back to the top of the heap. "We intend to do our best to restore interest in the worlds greatest" outdoor sport, and our first step is to boost the overnight purses to 00. The book for our twelve days racing will be distributed to horsemen Tuesday. It will contain races for purses of 00, ,000 and ,200, in addition to our usual stakes, such as the Dixie and Preakness. "Nominations for the Dixie, Preakness and other stakes close Monday with racing secretary Frank J. Bryan at Pimlico. Increasing the minimum purses to 00 causes an outlay of 3,000 more than a year ago, but with racing showing signs of regaining its former popularity we owe it to horsemen who have so graciously stuck by us during the depression."
