WHISK0L0 IN FAST TRIAL1 Prominent Texas Derby Candidates Works Mile in 1:41, Handily, Roman Soldier Not to Start Before Derby Day Saturdays Race to Decide Field for 15,000 Race. 1 ARLINGTON, Texas, April 11. Mrs. F. G Mars Whiskolo, which was given a good rest after finishing second to Gillie in the? Santa Anita Derby and one of the leading eligibles for Texas Derby honors, was called1 on this morning for his first ambitious work since arriving here. Forced to go through his conditioner under unpropitious conditions which consisted of a heavy sand storm and over a racing strip that was not at its best, the son of Diavolo reeled off a mile in 1:41, handily. Accompanied by Cheerus for five furlongs and commencing his task from the mile post on the inside course, Whiskolo was timed the quarter in :23, half mile in :47 and three-quarters in 1:14. He came back in excellent condition, and trainer Robert Mc-Garvey was highly pleased with the work. McGarvey is particularly high on the chances of the horse for Texas and Ken-i tucky Derby honors. "I believe he is one of the best horses I ever trained," said Mc Garvey. Coming from a horseman that conditioned such stars as Flat Iron, Martie Flynn and others, it speaks highly of the son of Diavolo. Although he has not fully decided, McGarvey might start the horse Saturday. He would like to have the three-year-old under colors before the 5,000 added race. Whiskolo is eligible for the mile and a sixteenth race Saturday, and in the event he accepts he will meet several other Derby eligibles. The field for the race is shaping up in fine style, and although It is believed no more than a dozen will go postwards for the nine furlongs, the best of the three-year-olds now racing will be under colors. Phil Reuter has definitely decided not to start Roman Soldier again until the Texas Derby. Each day a number of the eligibles are under colors. Several nominees from the second flight met at a mile for the Bedford Purse this afternoon and it attracted T. C. Wordens Prince Splendor for his first start of the year. Despite her poor showing against Roman. Soldier and others, -Benny Creech has not entirely given up on Hasty Glance. "I know that was not her race," said Creech, and I may have her under colors again in the next several days. The next race will decide whether she will fill her engagement." Furfiber still remains the dark horse of the field. His training is satisfactory to trainer G. L. Hamilton, and he turned back several nominees in his last race here. In that effort, Furfiber was forced to race on the extreme outside of his field and it was a better race than cold dope would show. With the running of the three-year-old race Saturday, the probable Derby starting field will be known. Several trainers are awaiting the outcome of that mile and a sixteenth journey before weighing the chances of their charges.
