RUTH JELINEK, close up early, hooked up with CONTRARY at the stretch and, after a hard drivt, outstayed the latter. CONTRARY set the pace under restraint and held on with good courage. LATER ON closed with a rush from a slow beginning. CARBINES COMET tired after being well up from the start. PAUL T. moved up menacingly on the rail in the stretch, then faltered. CORDON BLEU was rated off the pace until straightened into the stretch, easily disposed7 of GOLDEN X, and drew away. The latter was away well, set a good pace, but could not withstand the winner despite saving considerable ground. KING TODAY dropped back after racing a quarter, came again at the three-eighthj post and finished strongly while bearing out. REGIS PLAY lacked speed in the early stages, moved up fasi after racing a half mile and finished gamolv. SINGLE WAVE was never a contender.
