OLD PUBLICO OPENS TODAY Four Important Fixtures on Stake Program of Maryland Jockey Club. 5,000 Preakness Outstanding Event Dixie Handicap With 0,000 Added Attractive Feature. BALTIMORE, Md., April 28. Four important stakes will be decided at the Pimlico meeting of the Maryland Jockey Club, which opens its sixteen day session tomorrow. Climaxed by the forty-sixth running of the historic Preakness, Pimlico also offers the Dixie Handicap, the Baltimore Spring Handicap and the Pimlico Nursery. The Preakness, Marylands three-year-old classic, carries an added value of 5,000. This stake, which is yearly gaining in importance, attracts" most of the worthy three-year-olds in training and is expected to create a definite line on eligibles for the Belmont. The Dixie Handicap, mile and three-sixteenths special for three-year-olds and upward, will be decided on Saturday, May 9. This feature is endowed with 0,000 and usually entices sterling performers in the nations handicap division. The first Saturday of the meeting will see two stakes offered for decision. These are the six furlongs Baltimore Spring Handicap, for three-year-olds and upward, and the Pimlico Nursery, at four and one-half furlongs. Both of these features carry purses of ,500. Steeplechase racing will be resumed at the Hill Top course. Racing secretary Frank J. Bryan has scheduled a race through the field each day. Under the rules of the Maryland State Racing Commission eight races are permitted daily when there is a steeplechase on the card and unless the races for timber toppers fail to fill there will be eight races on each days program. That there is no dearth of timber toppers is evidenced by the fact that the second race for tomorrow attracted a limit field, making it necessary to put no less than six horses on the "also eligible" list. The opening day card is headed by the one mile and a sixteenth of the Whetstone Point, an allowance race for three-year-olds and upward. This has attracted six entries, including the Greentree Stable pair Per-adventure and First Minstrel. Included also in the entries are Walter M. Jeffords Fire-thorn, Dixie eligible which is making his second start of the season, and E. R. Bradleys Brokers Tip. While conflicting meetings might make for a shortage of good horses at the Hill Top course, divisions of the countrys leading stables are already quartered at Pimlico. Given good weather, the meeting should be a successful one in keeping with the general uptrend shown in Maryland this spring. . .
