STAFF OF VETERAN OFFICIALS Charles Trimble, B. J. Durnell and A. Swenke Appointed Patrol Judges for Coming Meeting. Veteran horsemen, owners and trainers of former years will make up the staff of Hawthorne patrol judges during the thirty-one-day meeting that opens Saturday, May 23. This year patrol judges have come into a new importance in Illinois racing, following rules adopted by the state racing commission. In former seasons patrol judges reported only flagrant fouls to the stewards stand. This year each of the three, who are stationed around the track, must report after each race, whether anything has happened or not. Hawthornes trio of patrol judges will be Charles Trimble, B. J. Durnell and A. Swenke. Trimble is a brother of Cliff Trimble, former Aurora manager, while Durnell is a brother of "Boots" Durnell, well-known trainer. All three are veterans long connected with horse racing in many of its phases. One new patrol stand is being erected at the Cicero track, and all three will be connected by telephone with the stewards stand, where Christopher J. FitzGerald and C. W. Hay will preside. It is a rule of the commission that each patrol judge must make his report before the result of the race is made official. Another change made at Hawthorne for the meeting will be shifting the placing judges to the inside of the track and the removal of the present stand, insuring a 100 per cent view of each finish by every spectator. The Foto Electric Eye will be stationed on the roof of the grandstand to decide all close finishes throughout the meeting.
