I EPSOM DOWNS TURF NOTES $ Winfrey Brothers, Houston breeders, brought in the highly-regarded juvenile Wild Cuckoo, which will be broken and put into training. They are hopeful of having the speedy youngster ready for his debut during the Arlington Downs meeting. Jockey Leland Lake has been engaged by J. B. Gilmore to ride Escohigh in the Texas Futurity, which will be run during the forthcoming meeting at Arlington Downs. The engagement of Lake for the stake was consummated by trainer L. Avant, Saturday morning at Epsom Downs. The schooling list of starter Val Sulich now contains four horses, Albino and Faniflo being the newest additions to the band of bad actors. Mr. Smiles, Execution and Luke W., all six-year-olds, are the trio of racers that J. R. McCombs brought in to represent him during the meeting. .Due to failure of the David Crockett Handicap, scheduled for Monday, to fill at the time of closing Friday evening, the feature was removed from Mondays card at Epsom Downs. The second and final issue of the condition book for the Epsom Downs meeting, embracing the racing from the seventeenth day to the twenty-sixth, has been received from the printers and is ready for distribution. Mrs. D. J. Sullivan ni. of San Antonio joined Mr. Sullivan in Houston Saturday for an indefinite visit, The San Antonio sportsman has a stable of thoroughbreds here in charge of ex-jockey Sammy Hicks. Trainer Joe W. Bernard arrived from Dallas Saturday morning with I See and Henry Hawk, the two racers he is handling for John Withers III. The latter also put in his appearance for a visit, The two-year-old filly Stamworth is the lone runner that C. V. Thompson will rely upon during the current meeting. The youngster is by Stamford Miss Roseworth. Spurs are not permitted to be a part of equipment at Epsom Downs because of a track rule adopted by the Texas Breeders and Racing Association last spring. There has been some confusion among horsemen here due to the fact that the rule does not apply at other Texas tracks. Z. E. McGregor, owner and trainer is up and around again after suffering a painfully bruised knee and a few minor cuts which were sustained in an automobile accident a few days ago.
