REAL LONG DISTANCE EVENT Long Trek Purse at 2 1-8 Miles Features Wednesdays Racing at Lincoln Fields. CRETE, 111., Oct 5. Those racing devotees who like to see thoroughbreds perform over routes should have their appetites whetted at Lincoln Fields here Wednesday, when the Lincoln Fields Jockey Club presents the longest race ever staged at the local course. It is the Long Trek Purse, and in it the contestants will be asked to negotiate two miles and a furlong two complete trips around the mile and a sixteenth track. Only the most stout-hearted of all the horses stabled at Crete and Homewood will try for the ,000 Long Trek Purse, but racing secretary William H. Shelley expects that a fair sized field will be in the starting gate. The response for the mile and a half race last week was good, and Shelley believes at least eight or ten will contest Wednesday. Two miles and an eighth is a long way, and the novelty of the event has made the Long Trek a big feature of the final week of racing at Lincoln Fields. The twenty-eight days meeting comes to a close on Saturday, when the ,500 added Marquette Handicap will engage the attention of the handicap division. There will be no handicap horses in the Long Trek Purse, but theyll be those admirable animals "which can run all day." It is hoped that the track will be fast for the event Whether it i3 or not a track mark will be hung up, since the race will mark the first time horses have been asked to go that far here. Among the thoroughbreds expected to compete in Wednesdays marathon is Justa i Sheik, winner of last weeks mile and a half event by coming from far back to get the nod in a photograph finish. Then there may be Redneck, which just missed the mile and a quarter track record, and The Break, which was favored in last weeks" marathon. Racing secretary Shelley was to announce weights today for the Marquette Handicap, final stake of the meeting.
