THREE-YEAR -OLD PROSPECTS OF 1937 SIR DAMION, bay colt, by Sir Callahad III. Ommiad, by Omar Khayyam; property of Marshall Field. On breeding alone Sir Damion is rated highly, his sire, Sir Callahatf III., having two Derby winners in Gallant Fox and Omaha to his credit, while the sire of his dam is a Derby winner himself, and the only imported horse ever to win the coveted race. By NORRIS ROYDEN . - mm i - - - - i i George Odom is training Sir Damion and Charing Cross, two sons of Sir Gallahad ITX, belonging to Marshall Field, which displayed much promise in their few races as juveniles. Sir Damion, whose dam is Ommiad, by Omar Khayyam, is preferred as the better prospect for distance running, as well as on the fact that his record last year was more impressive. , A well-made, good-sized colt, Sir Damion was not hurried in his training, making his debut in a maiden event at Aqueduct early In July, but not running again until the middle of August at Saratoga, where he defeated a field of classy maidens over the five and one-half furlongs distance, his time being 1:06. Close to the pace from the start. Sir Damion went to the front in the stretch to defeat Charing Cross by a length and a half as Mosawtre was third and Early Settler fourth. His next outing was in the Hopeful Stakes in which the track was sloppy. A. contender from the start the Field colt faltered in the stretch to finish fourth, beaten a dozen lengths by Maedic as Billionaire was second and Tedious third. Sir Damions next engagement was an overnight affair of six furlongs at Aqueduct, in which he tired in the final furlong to lose out by two lengths to Flying Cross as he finished ahead of No Dice, Idle Midget and others. The time was 1:124. For his final preparatory effort for the Futurity the Sir Gallahad III. colt was second most of the way in a dash of six furlongs straightaway, finishing a length and a half back of Optic as Merry Maker took third, with Biologist fourth. Trainer Odom was satisfied with the race and Sir Damion was given his chance In the Futurity. Under his weight of 122 pounds. Sir Damion was well up from the start of the six and one-half furlongs race, and then leaving the quarter pole he was sent forward to bid for the lead, but Pompoon already was making his run. He went into second place and then weakened slightly in the final few strides to lose second and third honors to Privileged and Flying Cross by very narrow margins, finishing slightly more than four lengths back of Pompoon. The race was run. in 1:16, which meant that Sir Damion just failed to hit 1:17. Not having raced since. Sir Damion has had a good, long rest and should be a fresh horse this spring. He developed well during the winter and starts his new campaign as one of the best-looking members of his division. Being by Sir Gallahad HI., from a daughter of Omar Khayyam, Sir Damion is bred like Gallant Sir and Sarada. Further strength is forthcoming from the distaff side of his pedigree, and he may be expected to- improve from his two to his three-year-old form as most horses of this type and breeding have done in the past.. Charing Cross started only five times, finishing second to Sir Damion in his first start at Saratoga and then easily taking a dash for maidens. He" was soundly beaten in the Hopeful, but after winning an allowance event at Belmont Park he was a starter in the Futurity, entering the final quarter in front only to weaken steadily in the last furlong to finish ninth, about seven lengths back" of Pompoon. He is very much a sprinter in type and trainer Odom doubts if he will stay, even though Charing Cross is from a daughter of Gay Crusader and otherwise is stoutly bred. Charing Cross has been training right along with Sir Damion, and will be given every opportunity to disprove his trainers contention. Flying Fox J?,.
