ASHEN FURNISHES AN UPSET Other Unexpected Winners Turn Up At Arlington Downs. Springtime Handicap Purse Falls to C. A. Calhoun Attendance Not Up to Usual Figure Track Fast ARLINGTON, Texas, April 19. In another of the many surprises that prevailed for the opening of the third full week of the spring season, C. A. Calhouns Ashen was a handy winner of the Springtime Handicap, fifth and best race offered at Arlington Downs this afternoon. Mrs. E. H. Bartletts Zevson was second, a length back of the winner and a head before T. P. Morgans Sachem, which tired after leading the small field of six to the final furlong of the mile and a sixteenth. Holl Image was fourth and then came Wood-lander, which shared favoritism with Zevson and Comm. Ideal weather again was on tap and the track was at its best. However, the crowd was not up to standard, only a fair-sized gathering being present The sextet began in fine style, with Zevson first in motion, but the lightly weighted Sachem was soon in command and sprinted into a two-length lead during the run to the back stretch. Robert Vedder had the winner in second place, as they made the turn, and Zevson was showing the way to the others. Sachem steadily increased his margin, but after entering the final half mile. Ashen began to catch him and Vedder had the Calhoun entry in front shortly after reaching the final furlong. CORUM FOURTH. Sachem was not ready to give up the task and held cn to the final sixteenth, where he tired, and Zevson, under the top impost of 116 pounds, came on to head him in the final stride. Holl Image offered a mild threat leaving the back stretch, but he was forced wide approaching the stretch and was forced to race on the outside of Coram, to lead Wood-lander, which was on the extreme inside by a length for fourth honors. Clap In was a big disappointment in the-Blossom Time Purse, for maidens. Capt James, his stablemate, finished third, but he was no match for Sun Victor and Westy"s Hero, which came to the finish a head apart and two lengths before him. After rushing to the front on the far turn, Clap In bore out badly, but after Arthur Craig had straightened him and had him gaining on the leaders, he pulled himself up in the stretch and was a well-beaten fifth. When Clap In became unruly, Capt. James took command, but it was only momentary, for Westys Hero, which was in closest pursuit, soon took the lead. However, he was unable to draw clear, and Sun Victor, which was always best of the others, came on to beat him in a spirited duel. CANAVIA GAME. Semicolon, son of Prisoner and Marie W., graduated from the maiden ranks when he turned back Canavia, Tap Time and eight other plater Texas-bred three-year-olds in the first race. Ridden by L. Lake and under C. B. Daniels colors, the winner was rushed to the front and although Canavia raced head and head with him to the final forty yards, he proved the gamer and Had a half of a length margin at the end. Another choice wasbeaten when Coltman finished second to Playmay at the end of the second race. Jessie D. M;, which chased the winner from the start, was third. Although fast to begin, Coltman was shuffled back when the speedy Jessie D. M. came over In the first few strides and, forced to work his way forward on the outside, was unable to catch Playmay, which, after making every post a winning one, came to the finish with two and one-half lengths to spare. Marchline got up to beat Parva Stella by a head in the third race. Amazement, a heavily supported choice, was third, a neck back of Parva Stella. Rushed into contention by Sammy Roberts, Marchline steadily wore Parva Stella down, to be drawing away from her at the close. After being unable to improve her position for nearly five furlongs. Amazement responded in fine style during the last furlong and was going the fastest of all at the finish.
