DERBY INTEREST MOUNTING War Admiral and Court Scandal Expected Wednesday at the Downs. Heelfly end Sunset Trail II. Reach Louisville Without Mishap Gerald in Most Impressive Gallop. LOUISVILLE, Ky.f April 26. With several of the candidates already at the scene turning in impressive workouts, though track conditions were not conducive to high speed, and two more outstanding nominees due here Wednesday, interest in the impending sixty-third running of the 0,000 Kentucky Derby skyrocketed to a new high at Churchill Downs today. With such potential candidates as War Admiral, decisive winner of the Chesapeake Stakes at Havre de Grace Saturday, and Court Scandal, runner-up in the same race, arriving Wednesday and others to follow almost daily, enthusiasm will know no let-up until the coveted fixture has been run and won on May 8. War Admiral is owned by Samuel D. Riddle, while Court Scandal, winner of the rich Flamingo Stakes at Miami, is the property of Townsend B. Martin. The Derby colony hero was augmented by two other ranking hopefuls over the weekend when the Waggoner Brothers Texas candidate, Heelfly, arrived from Arlington Downs, and Raoul Walshs California threat, the imported Sunset Trail II., came in from Tanforan. Eoth shipped in excellent fashion and neither lost any time getting on the track, both being out this morning, Heelfly to work a mile, and the Walsh three-year-old for a gallop. AWAITED WITH INTEREST. War Admirals arrival is awaited with keen interest as he now threatens to displace J. H. Louchheims Pompoon as the choice for the premier turf classic. Of course, Pompoon has a chance to further entrench his position as the favorite when he performs in the Wood Memorial Stakes at Jamaica next Saturday. An impressive victory there probably would leave him the highest in public esteem. Although the Downs track, following a severe drenching Saturday, was slow and the weather was generally unsettled, with a chilly, wind, trainers of Derby horses gave no quarters, as all candidates went through their regularly prescribed exercises. In addition to Heelfly and Sunset Trail II., other aspirants for honors in the 0,000 special under saddle were Mrs. Ethel V. Mars pair. Reaping Reward and Military; Mrs. W. H. Fursts Gerald, I. J. Collins Bernard F., Miss Mary Hirschs No Sir, Col. Maxwell Howards Sceneshifter and Fencing, and a few from the ranks of the lesser distinguished eligiblcs. GERALD IMPRESSES. Of the longer workouts, that of Gerald drew much favorable comment from horsemen and morning visitors. With Jack West-rope, his Derby pilot, in the saddle and trainer B. B. Williams directing operations, the Chicago-owned colt unreeled a finely-done nine furlongs. Starting at the furlong post in the home stretch and nicely rated throughout, .Gerald opened the trial, his longest since reaching here from California, with a quarter in :26, added another in the same time and, when he covered the third quarter at a similar clip to the very fraction of a second, Wcstropes rating was faultless. Then followed a quarter in :26, making his time for the mile 1:44. The closing furlong was negotiated in :12, to bring the time for the full mile and an eighth to 1:57. In commenting on the trial Williams said that it pleased him very much and that he was satisfied in every way with his candidate. WORK MILE IN 1:45. Bernard F. and Heelfly worked a mile each in the same time, 1:45. The Collins horse had the older Paradisical, which is prepping for the Clark Handicap, Saturdays opening day stake attraction, as a companion, while the Three Ds horse traveled alone. Trainer Jack Pryce had the latter out early, while trainer Al Miller drilled the Collins pair a short time later. Heelfly ran the first quarter in :26, the half in :50, and the three-quarters in l:17ii, while Bernard F.s fractions were :25, :51 and 1:18. In the final quarter Paradisical drew away slightly from her younger stable-mate to complete the eight furlongs in 1:41. The program of trainer Robert McGarvey for Reaping Reward and Military was a brisk three furlongs in preparation for longer conditioners tomorrow. Working together, the Chicago candidates traveled a quarter in :23, and the three furlongs in :36. Neither was extended. CARL S. SENSATIONALLY. It remained for one of the outsiders, James Chesneys Carl S., to turn in the best spin of the morning from a time standpoint for the Derby horses. In company with the stables Clark Handicap eligible, Professor Paul, Carl S. clicked off eight furlongs in 1:43, the half mile in :49, and the six furlongs in 1:16, in a very creditable move. According to communications received at Churchill Downs, trainer George Conway is shipping four or five others with War Ad- i miral, and trainer W. Burrows has made reservations for two stalls, in addition to the one for Court Scandal. George Walsh, who trains Sunset Trail II. for his brother, the movie director, plans to start the Irish-bred three-year-old before the Derby and indicated that it might be in the Derby Trial Purse, a mile event scheduled here next Tuesday. No doubt his showing fJ ,Lt nee will have a strong bearing on Ms Derby staYu" Trainer Walsh said that he would like to bring jockey A. Gray from horse here, but is not his f hP coast to ride ure that the boy will be available. Accompanying Sunset Trail II. from Califrn.a was candidate the Clark Handicap French-bred Walshs Grand n"u vh.ch looms a certain starter in the 0,000 race nere next Saturday.
