QUASIMODO IN SPEEDY RACE Runs Fast to Cover Six Furlongs in 1:11 to Win Melody Meadows. Miss Premier and Windshield Dead Heat for Second Place, With ratrollte Following and Beaten by a Nose. ARLINGTON, Texas, April 26. Speeding over the six furlongs in 1:11, which came within one-fifth of a second of the track record, R. R. Greenlees Quasimodo was an easy winner of the Melody Meadows Purse, main contest for the opening of the final week of Arlington Downs meeting, but W. C. Weants Miss Premier and J. Baum-bachs Windshield were so closely locked for second that the picture failed to separate them. Patrolitc was fourth, a nose back of the dead heat pair and a half length before Trouper, which heat Brown Cone, the other starter, by the same margin. Despite a heavy sandstorm which reached this section during the night, a good sized crowd was present for the mediocre program. The track was at its best. Favorites were in the minority, but with few exceptions found a place among the leading trio. Running the four and one-half furlongs in :53, which clipped a fifth of a second from the track record, R. L. Oldhams Miss Monte was a driving winner of the Botanic Gardens Purse, fourth race. Driving through on the inside at the stretch turn. Miss Monte came to the finish a neck before Double Brush, which was making her debut in Mrs. A. M. Creechs colors. Mr. Grief, the favorite, was third, a half of a length back of Double Brush and a length before Lady B., which tired after leading the ten plater juveniles to the final quarter. Earle P., a strongly supported second choice, finished fifth. GRANBURY SCORES. Granbury opened the program with an easy triumph over Grimaldi, Wegoway and six others. Steadied along while racing head and head with Grimaldi during the run to the final furlong of the six and one-half furlongs sprint, the winner, which had the services of Warren Cornay, took command soon afterward and was one and one-half lengths before Grimaldi at the finish. Wegoway came from far back to beat the tiring Playmay by three parts of a length for minor honors. Beginners Bait was never a factor, Jolyon, which was beaten by small margins in his two previous races, chalked up his first victory of the meeting when he turned back Eva R., Transen and nine others in the second race, also over six and one-half furlongs. Working his way forward steadily while Cheka and Transen battled for the leadership, the winner, which had the services of G. L. Smith, forged to the front in the final furlong to be well in hand and slightly more than a length in the van of the fast-finishing Eva R. at the end. Amazement provided the first popular score when she got up in the last stages to lead Modesto by a neck at the end of six and one-half furlongs in the third race. Third went to Emery. Under R. L. Vedder and far back for five-sixteenths, the winner moved into contention near the final three-eighths and, wearing down the leaders in rapid strides, subdued Modesto, which led from soon after the start. Emery held on well after being in close quarters early, but Mannie and Grey-broom showed nothing after being shuffled back on the far turn.
