i NEW YORK RACING i GAINS OVER LAST YEAR ; i- 4 NEW YORK, N. Y., April 29. The New York racing season has already ,shoyn, in attendance, receipts and payable" taxes, a striking improvement over racings opening a year ago. It had been presumed that. the public feeling of haid times would be reflected by a reduced attendance, but the figures so far are more than encouraging. Racing opened last year on a Thursday, so that the first six days had the benefit of an opening day crowd and a first Saturday crowd. The one was 13,152 and the other 16,320. This year, with the opening day falling on Saturday, the first six days had the benefit of only that one big day. The attendance was an opening day record for Jamaica, 20,383. With, nevertheless, only the one big day to swell its figures, the first six days of this year show an attendance of 60,595, gate receipts of 08,321.40 and a payable tax of 7,797.86. For the first six days of 1937 the figures were 57,788. 01,375.20 and 7,063.43. The increases for this year therefore are 1 2,809, ,946.20 and 34.43.
