WILL NOT BE MAYOR CANDIDATE WASHINGTON, D. C, Dec. 15. Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes announced today that he would not be a candidate for mayor of Chicago. The cabinet member reached his decision to remain on the job with the New Deal in Washington after giving serious thought to appeals by Chicago groups that he enter the mayoralty race as a "reform" candidate. Long 4.n business in Chicago and a resident of suburban Win-netka, Secretary Ickes has shown deep interest in Chicago civic affairs for many years. Ickes said that, after consultation "with many, including the president," he was convinced he could do more "to help continue the New Deal" by remaining in his cabinet post rather than entering the Chicago campaign. He said: "The President I has told me that he wants me to stay in the national administration to add what lit i I tie I can to that force and I accepted the j judgment of my leader."
