Astes Miss Happy, under a well-judged ride from Euclid LeBlanc, took the lead at the head of the stretch and drew off from all rivals in the stretch to win the Ponce de Leon Purse. The five and a half furlongs dash featured the sport at Tropical Park. LeBlanc had the winner four lengths clear of J. B. Partridge Major B. as the field went under the wire. William Gallaghers Royal Taste, after showing in front at one stage of the journey, wound up third. Modern Youth, which also set part of the pace, was fourth. Pekaki was the only other starter. The three-year-old daughter of Happy Argo and My Dear sprinted home in 1:05, over a lightning-fast track. Once more the skies were sunny for the sport. Royal Taste tired in the stretch drive. Modern Youth showed only a flash and Pekaki was never seriously in the race. River Divide Farms Milk, ridden by Jimmy Ashcroft, ran away from all rivals in the stretch to win the opening event by five lengths over G. R. Yeargins Moss Gal.
