RECRUIT TO OWNERS RANKS H. S. Chittenden of Burlington, Iowa, Sends Derby Candidate to Trainer Walker at Churchill Downs. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 6. A newcomer to racing this spring is H. S. Chittenden, who maintains the Shokokon Farm, near Burlington, Iowa. He is making his entry into the thoroughbred sport with a three-year-old colt, named Wapello, a good-looking chestnut by Impropriety and Easter Mary, which he raised himself. Chittenden, who supervised the shipment of Wapello to Churchill Downs, from his farm in Iowa, has turned the colt over to "Chuck" Walker, to train, having had no experience himself in the conditioning of race horses. The Iowan, who thought enough of his horse to make him eligible for the Kentucky Derby, comunicated several weeks ago with jockey Charley Kurtsinger, and asked his advice about getting the colt ready for the races. The Louisville rider suggested that the horse be shipped here and then turned over to Walker. Kurt-singer has agreed to gallop the horse. Chittenden hasnt any illusions about getting Wapello ready for the Derby, but, as he put it himself, he thinks the horse should be given a chance to show his running ability in the kind of competition for which he was bred. Chittenden says Wapello raced only once in his life, winning a three-furlong dash at an Iowa fair last year.
