VAGRANT WON DERBY UNDER LIGHT IMPOST OF 97 POUNDS LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 5.— During the early runnings of the Kentucky Derby light imposts were carried by all starters. Vagrant, winner of the second Derby in 1876, shouldered only 97 pounds, three less than Aristides, Ihe memorable victor in the first running of the classic. From 1877 to 1885, inclusive, the weights fluctuated between 100 and 110 pounds. In 1886 weights were increased, the successful colt, Ben Ali, picking up 118 pounds. Again there was an increase in 1891 when colts were required to pack 122 pounds. In 1896 Ben Brush captured the race under 117 pounds, and it was not until 1905 that another winner, Agile, * carried 122 pounds. From 1906 to 1919 inclusive, a lower scale prevailed as geldings continued to receive an allowance of three pounds, maidens were allowed five pounds and conditions carried some penalties. Since 1920 when the gelding Paul Jones raced home in front under 126 pounds, the race has been governed by its present conditions, the only allowance being five pounds for fillies and there are no penalties
