Master of Nydrie Not Disheartened Van Clief Adds to Acreage Of Farm Brood Mare Band Marked by Quality ESMONT, Va., May 16. At a time when breeders throughout the country are curtailing activities, Ray Allan Van Clief, master of nearby Nydrie Stud, is building for the future by expanding. He has added acreage to his already large establishment. Recently, he closed a deal that brought into his possession historic Talhvood, an adjoining property. Tallwood, renowned for its beautiful blue grass pastures and yew trees some of which are more than 200 years old is one of the most famous estates in this Commonwealth. It was originally part of old Enniscorthy, founded about 769 by John Coles II. of Hanover County, and named for the Coles family seat in Leinster, Ire-, land. Van Clief intends restoring Tallwoods pasturage to its former state of fertility for his breeding operations, and foals, and give old pastures a respite. Nydrie is another example of a thoroughbred, breeding nursery that attained success because of the excellence of its brood mares. Although the band of mares is comparatively small, it is select. For that reason it has delivered select produce. Among that produce is Dinner Date. Heloise Brood Mare Queen Naturally the honored matron of the local harem is Heloise. That good producer would enhance anybodys breeding institution. Her lineage sparkles with outstanding produce. Her sire was the noted Friar Rock while her dam is the imported mare Affection. The latter, sired by Isidor from the Minting mare One I Love, produced Emotion, winner of the Test Stakes and dam of the Futurity winner High Strung; Escutcheon, a stake winner and dam of the Texas Derby winner Mars Shield, and Strange Device, and Hug Again. The latter is the dam of Sun Again. Three of Heloises foals, Dinner Date, Sgt. Byrne and Tintagel, earned collectively 48,375. Another stake winning offspring of hers is Francesco. That son of Jacopo, foaled in 1934, was among the first Nydrie-breds consigned to Saratoga Springs and he brought ,500 from the Llangollen Stable. Also among the 1934 foals bred by Van Clief were Parscout and Whitie Tie. Those three were the first stake winners bred by the master of the local nursery. The most noted of the Nydrie-breds is Dinner Date, foaled in 1936 and a daughter of Stimulus, as was Donita M., also dropped that year by the Camp-fire mare, My Risk. Gallant Lady Another Star Another good producing mare iri the band is Gallant Lady. A 12-year-old daughter of Sir Gallahad HI., she is from the Clarissimus mare Peroration and thus is a half sister to Perjury, dam of Damaged Goods. Gallant Lady is the dam of Deil, winner and stake performer and now serving at stud; Headmistress, winner of Stayers Highweight Handicap, carrying 146 pounds; Pompeys Folly, a winner; Bay Salute,, also a winner; Pretty Lady; and Happy Home. The latter, a son of Blenheim II., brought 1,000 from the Mills-dale Stable at the 1939 Saratoga Springs yearling sales. Last year J. H. Whitney paid ,000 for a brown colt from Gallant Lady sired by Jacopo and later named Picket. Gallant Lady and five other Nydrie mares have foaled this year. Their offspring are as follows: Bay filly, by Pompey Gallant Lady, by Sir Gallahad IH. Bay filly, by Sir Gallahad Tn. Peggy Byrne, by Stimulus. Chestnut colt, by Pompey Parco, by Omar Khayyam. Bay filly, by Johnstown Durzes, by Durbar II. Bay filly, by Pompey Broad Ripple, by Stimulus. Chestnut filly, by Omaha Morning, by American Flag. This year the mares will be bred as follows: TO FLARES Durzes. by Durbar II. Embroidery, by Celt. Morning, by American Flag One Hour, by Snob II. TO POMPEY Broad Ripple, by Stimulus Hocus Pocus, by Sir Gallahad III. TO SIR GALLAHAD III. Peggy Byrne, by Stimulus Heloise, by Friar Rock. TO RHODE SCHOLAR Parco, by Omar Khayyam Parthenis, by Ajax. TO JACOPO Gallant Lady, by Sir Gallahad m. Peroration, by Clarissimus. R. A. VAN CLIEF Has added considerable acreage to his Nydrie Stud in Virginia.
