- Detroit Meeting j Begins Saturday ,000 Handicap and Two Supporting Events Carded For Inaugural Day Prograrrf DETROIT. Mich., May 16. Horsemen and racing devotees can get some idea of the caliber of racing the Detroit Racing Association will stage throughout its 73- ! day meeting, beginning on May 23, by 1 looking over the programs for- the first ! two days, a Saturday and the following Monday. The first days card will have a ,000 feature and two attractive supporting attractions. The richer event is styled the Boots and Saddle Handicap and it will see a field of speedsters meeting at six furlongs for the rich award. The principal secondary events will be the ,000 Inaugural Handicap at a mile and 70 yards and ,500 Bugle Call Purse, a four and one-half furlongs dash for two-year-olds. Thus, on the initial program, Detroit racing followers will have an opportunity to see top-notch thoroughbreds in three divisions; older sprinters, older routers and two-year-olds, all in competition in a single afternoon. Typicalof Offerings for Whole Meeting The Monday card, ordinarily fashioned for less capable horses, will offer the ,500 Hamtramck Combination Purse at one mile and a sixteenth and the ,200 Grosse Pointe Farms Handicap at six furlongs. These two offerings will appeal to horses just a cut under the best and very often such contests produce thoroughbreds who later are able to hold their own in any company. These two early programs are typical of the entertainment arranged for the first 10 days of the Motor City season, condi- tions for which already are in distribution, according to word from racing secretary Charles F. Henry. As an especial inducement to trainers to keep their better horses busy, the Detroit Racing Association has announced the awarding of monetary prizes to condition-, ers Of the first three horses to finish in most of the features which attract seven or more starters. Trainers also will share in the prize money in all races decided at distances of a mile and a half or greater. In general, the Michigan racing group lias outlined a most liberal program and it is sure to pay dividends in the improved quality of horses which will be available here this summer.
