Given an alert ride by Clyde Hooper, Sam- eron reached the finish of the six-furlong sprint three lengths before R. S. McLaugh- lins favored Fairaris. The latter gave a game performance to take down second honors in that he pulled up badly lamed. Hilltop Stock Farms Topnard ran third, a length and one-half behind Fairaris, downing the eight other starters for the - minor portion of the purse. Sameron became a double winner at the current meeting when he captured the Van Buren and stepped the distance over the fast track in 1:11%. Overlooked almost entirely in the speculation, despite his good local record, Sameron returned his scattered supporters 0.60 straight. Starter Ruby White sent the field off in good alignment and Sameron immediately took command, shaking off Safe Bid after the first three-eighths of a mile. Sky Bound moved up resolutely near the stretch and Fairaris raced third at that juncture, while Hooper bided his time with the vic- tor. During the stretch run Fairaris made a game effort to catch Sameron, but he was not equal to the occasion, although he had little difficulty in saving second over the fast-closing Topnard. Frances W. Annexes Third Frances W., a representative of H. Cantor and alertly ridden by Marcus Pena. earned a length and one-half verdict in the third race, which matched 10 of the better three-year-old platers at six furlongs. Mrs. E. Clouds Quickkick ran second, a head before Harry Stutts Open Fire, who was third. Just a head farther back. Four Oaks Stables favored Intellect ran fourth. Pena took the Cantor filly to the front early and, after his mount had shaken off Lumber King, she continued gamely enough through the stretch to retain her advantage. Quickkick held on well enough to save the place award over Open Fire, who closed strongly on the outside. Frances W., victor in three races during 1943. visited the winners circle for the first time her three during -year -old campaign and sprinted the distance in 1:13%. Well backed by many in the good crowd present. Frances W. returned 0.20 in the "tote." B. B. Johnsons Gezira registered a front running surprise score in the six-furlong opener under strong handling by Willie McCadden. The Johnson filly, recently acquired from Col. C. V. Whitney, was a length and one-half before Busy Line at the wire while the latter was three lengths before Miss Rink, in the field of 12 starters. Four Oaks Stables favored Jessica fell j lame after the start and was pulled up. Gezira paid 0.20 straight.
