- I I j I J. PRICE SALLEE Sal lee Arrives at Downs With String of Fifteen Will Only Direct Conditioning Of Piatt Horses This Season LOUISVILLE, Ky., March 31.— J. Price Sallee, Lexington conditioner who served his apprenticeship with the late John E. Madden and one of the leading mid-western trainers, checked in at Churchill Downs today with 15 horses he will campaign here and on the Chicago circuit for Thomas! Piatt and Tom Carr Piatt. Sallee has been directing the training of the Piatt horses for many years and for, several years handled thoroughbreds belonging to Dr. Charles E. Hagyard, Lewis J. Tutt and others. However, due to the shortage of help, Sallee is confining his duties to the Piatt horses. Although he does not believe he has any champions in his barn, Sallee is of the opinion that his charges will win their share of races. Well advanced in training, the Piatt colorbearers are expected to be seen in competition during the early part of the Keeneland meeting, which ushers in the Kentucky season on Saturday, April 15. Seven members of the stable saw competition last year and the others are two-year-olds. Sallee left four head at Keeneland, and these will rejoin the stable prior to its departure for Chicago and the Lin- coin Fields session. Roscoe Goose, who gave up training for the duration, and Buck Weaver, turf edi- tor of the Louisville Times, spent yesterday at Keeneland inspecting the horses in training at that point. Although it was not a day conducive for training. Goose, upon his return here, reported that the horses appear to be well advanced and expects the Lexington representatives to play an important part in the local season. Weaver expressed himself as well pleased with By Jimminy, the three -eyar-old son of Phara-mond II., who James Smith is preparing for the Kentucky Derby for Alfred Parker. A rabid Calumet fan, Weaver was disappointed that the Wright colorbearers were not at the farm or at Keeneland, and that they would be shipped to Maryland direct from Hialeah Park. - : i : | j j
