Hollyman and Invercork Annex Honors In Sportsmans Divided Fairfax Purse Former Defeats Double Call4 By Length; Nellie Weed Is Beaten Head in Latter Half SPORTSMANS PARK, C i C e r o, 111.. May 5. — Divisions of the Fairfax Purse, five furlongs sprints, were the best offerings on todays card at this point and in the first of these, offered fifth on the program, Mrs. G. H. Emicks hard-hitting Hollyman, gave evidence that he was back in top shape when he was up to earn a length decision over Double Call, who races for Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Lancaster. Valdina Date was a fast-finishing third, an additional half length away for Mrs. J. L. Oglesby. Generally thought to favor a longer distance, Hollyman was not given the support that his class entitles him and returned .60 as he was timed in 1:04% over a track that drying out to be designated good. The second division of the Fairfax resulted in a bang-up finish when Invercork, representing the partnership of Guercio and Rutter and an outsider in the wagering, secured room on the inside to oust the pacemaking Whosyourgal from command on the stretch turn only to find a serious threat compelling him to exert himself to the limit at the end as Nellie Weed, under the silks of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Sopsic, drove through on the inside of him and failed to get up by only a head. Whosyourgal was able to save third place for H. G. Knott ► __ slightly more than a length farther back. R. L. Baird rode Invercork, who paid 8.60 and was timed in l:041/5, two fifths of a second faster than the first division of the race. The victory of the winner was his first of the season in eight trips to the post. Gilberto Olivera rode a heady race on Hollyman, who has a tendency to loaf in the early stages, and although he was before only one horse entering the back-stretch, he kept his charge under pressure to move into closer contention on the outside. Brown Dame and Double Call were racing as a team in the lead, and midway of the backstretch Double Call disposed of Brown Dame to take command. On the final turn Double Call was a length in the clear as Brown Dame began to fade, and Hollyman had reached third place. Straight in the home lane, Olivera sent Hollyman around the outside to reach second place as Brown Dame was done, and in the resultant drive was able to draw away slowly from Double Call, who was, however, reluctant to surrender. Valdina Date had never been far back, and when set down in the home lane, finished with good speed to keep Double Call at his task to save place honors. Cloudy overhead conditions prevailed, but there was no rain and the track was drying out from recent downpours. A crowd of 12,108 was on hand as the sport moved into its second full week at this point.
