Hard ridden by Harold Wallace Mealso, a son of Menow and Pooks Hill, defeated four other nominees for the Bashford Manor Stakes which is to have its 1947 renewal here next Saturday. Finishing determinedly Mealson reached the end of the five-furlong feature a neck in advance of Augustus and Nahms Loujac, second by three lengths before Henry Forrests Cotton Joe. Gleeson and Litwins Fore Caddy and W. M. Mikels Hypothesis, the only other starters, followed the placed trio to the wire in that order. Mealso carried 115 pounds in the Broomstick and he sped the five furlongs over the firm footing in 1:00%, commendable time. The fourth straight favorite to score on the card, Mealso was held at 6 to 5 and accounted for his second purse of the current Kentucky season, having graduated during the recent Keeneland meeting. Shakes Off Fore Caddy Mealso assumed command immediately starter Ruby White sent the small field away from the stalls and after engaging Fore Caddy for three-eighths shook off the latter and then held on well enough during the stretch run to withstand a good bid by Loujac. While Lojack was a neck short of Loujac. While Loujac was a neck short of Joe for the place award and the two leaders qualified nicely for their week-end engagements in the Bashford Manor. Fore Caddy, who recently won here, had speed to the stretch, then gave way badly during the drive and was beaten off nearly six lengths and Hypothesis never was a serious factor in the juvenile dash. Ideal overhead conditions prevailing here today, a crowd of some 10,000 enthusiastic racing followers witnessed the sport at this historic racing grounds. Eight of the better class two-year-old fillies met in the five furlongs Top Flight Purse and Joseph A. Goodwins Dixie Dinah, a homebred daughter of Balladier and Beatit, drove to a three-quarters length graduation victory, under a hustling ride by Steve Brooks. William Veenemans Sun Tavy, who had some bad racing luck, came fast through the stretch and was an easy second over Maxwell and Perrys Play Again, third.
