Juveniles Will Vie In Bashford Manor Phar Mon Early Choice for Week-End Stake at Downs; Whirl Blast Rated Highly CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 5. — The 0,000 Bashford Manor Stakes, traditional five-furlong dash for two-year-old colts and geldings, is to headline next Saturdays program at this racing grounds. Named in honor of the nearby thoroughbred nursery, which sent four Kentucky Derby winners to the post while operated by the late George Long, the Bashford Manor annually brings out a quick band of youngsters. When nominations for the stake closed last February 15, 114 two-year-olds were made eligible for the fixture and William Veneemans Phar Mon, victor in the Hia-leah Juvenile Stakes and Keenelands Lafayette Stakes, is the present choice for the test. Phar Mon may have a useful running mate in the half holiday feature if Mrs. Veenemans Tiger Flash, a quick son of Tiger, goes postward. Tiger Flash looked good in several Kentucky appearances and he has worked exceptionally well for his Bashford Manor engagement. Calumet Farms probable representatives in the week-end stake are Whirl Blast, a son of the mighty Whirlaway, and Free America, the get of Blenheim II., and Columbiana. Whirl Blast won impressively at Keeneland before his transfer to Churchill Downs, while Free America finished fourth behind his stablemate, but showed such high speed during the final quarter mile of that race that shrewd observers believe that the latter colt is the better of the Calumet homebred pair. Loujac May Go Postward Augustus and Nahms Loujac, who sprinted to a game decision over good company here on inaugural day, is another Bashford Manor eligible rated as dangerous. Gleeson and Litwins Fore Caddy also visited the local winners circle. W. J. Waldens Circus Clown, victor over four Bashford Manor nominees in the Black Toney Purse at Churchill Downs, second to Bewitch in Keenelands Dinner Purse and winner of the Brookdale Purse, may be hard to whip if he races in his best form next Saturday. Tomorrows program at the Downs is to match five better-than-average middle-distance performers in the one and one-sixteenth miles Jamestown Purse. Mrs. R. G. Raines Dockie, David Fergusons Bob Murphy, Jess Trents Stride Well, Miss E. J. Wilsons Dark Heather and Mrs. John S. Letelliers Uncle Mac will contest the feature and the probable choice for the headliner is Uncle Mac, who has been showing improvement in recent outings. The Seelbach Hotel Handicap, six furlongs for three-year-olds and "upward, is Wednesdays major offering and entries close today for that mid-week sprint. Four-year-olds and upward are to hold the spotlight Thursday and horses from those age divisions are to meet in a one mile and one-sixteenth event. Several other good overnight allowance numbers are listed in the condition book for decision this week.
