May 7. — Rare Perfume, carrying the silks of track president George D. Widener, won the fifty-first running of the Fashion Stakes at Belmont Park today, and Daniel Hess Blue Lancer took the forty-eighth edition of the Swift Stakes. Rare Perfume, a bay filly by Eight Thirty — Fragrance, by Sir Gallahad III., skipped down four and a half furlongs of the Widener straightaway in :5125, three-fifths off the track record, to beat A. G. Vanderbilts favored Bed o Roses by a head and pay .10. Robert M. Woods High Frequency was only a neck away at the wire. Rare Perfume, who was graduating on the third attempt, earned 0,275 and was smoothly ridden by young Emil Flutie. Blue Lancer, a Preakness supplemental entrant, led all but the first few strides of the Swift tc score by a length over King Ranchs Curandero, while Gustave Rings Galloping Gus was a distant third at the end of the seven furlongs, just a head before William Helis Danherst. Algasir and Mirabeau, who raced as an entry and were made odds-on choices by the crowd of 34,257 who turned out in bright, breezy weather, finished fifth and seventh, respectively. There was an objection after the running of the Swift, but after examination of the movies, the stewards maintained the result. Blue Lancer paid 1.20 to his backers, added 0,915 to his earn- ► ings, and was teletimed a sparkling 1:2435 over the rapidly drying track. As the field for the Fashion hit full speed, Bed o Roses, racing along the inside, had a narrow lead over High Frequency in the middle of the track, while Rare Perfume was running strongly on the outside. Tunic, Mackle, Scotch Wine and Luring followed. As the fillies crossed the main track, High Frequency led Rare Perfume by a head. Bed o Roses had dropped back to third place and Guerin was beginning to shake his reins at her. She responded quickly and, as Rare Perfume put High Frequency away, the favorite charged up along the rail with a bid that just failed. High Frequency held on well, showing marked improvement over her Jamaica races. Tunic, who had won her only start in Maryland, went postward as second choice, but was unable to threaten at any stage and finished three lengths out of the money, in fourth place. Scotch Wine, Luring and Mackle followed. Disconsolate was first out of the gate in the Swift, but Blue Lancer quickly took command, while Curandero hesitated at the start. As Blue Lancer took the lead, he was followed by Arise, Disconsolate, Algasir, Galloping Gus and Curandero, who was rushed up along the inside rail. Rounding the far turn, Curandero was already in second place and lapped on the Blue Swords colt. Nearing the head of the stretch, Blue Lancer led Curandero by a head, while Continued on Page Three Blue Lancer, Rare Perfume Annex Stakes at Belmont Continued from Page One Galloping Gus was lapped on them on the outside, with Algasir several lengths away in fourth place, followed by Disconsolate, Arise and Danherst, who was beginning to move up from the rear ranks. Just as it appeared that Curandero was going to draw away, Blue Lancer found a reserve of power and gradually pulled away from the King Ranch colt, as the paid widened out on the rest of the field. Galloping Gus was staggering at the end, just saving third honors from Danherst, while Algasir stopped badly. Albert Schmidl rode Blue Lancer confidently. Dave Gorman, who piloted Curandero, claimed that Blue Lancer came over on him and bumped him between the three-eighths and five-sixteenths poles, but the movies showed no interference.
