Bookers good mare, Lawless Miss, made play of her six rivals in the six-furlong Cleveland News Handicap today, coming from behind to simply walk away from her field in the final furlong and win eased up by three lengths. Hall and Fetzers Spry Chic, running as an entry with Queen Gohi, was closest to the victress at the finish, three-quarters of a length before S. J. Browns Tubby B., with Mrs. L. P. Lapuyades Lovely Trace completing the order of finish. Lawless Miss was heavily favored and returned her backers even money, while accomplishing her task over the slow racing strip in 1:16%. Cleveland patrons turned out generously for the Thistle Down opening, with better than 11,000 in attendance. The weather left something to be desired, as overnight rains turned the unseasonably warm temperatures to an uncomfortably cool degree. The sun, however, was out for the latter part of the afternoon and lent its warming rays to an otherwise dismal day. Lawless Miss was given the title of "queen" at Lincoln Downs, at which course she tallied four consecutive triumphs before an unsuccessful sortie in the Inaugural Handicap at Suffolk Downs. She definitely extended her reign to Ohio today, winning the inaugural feature of this 20-day meeting with consummate ease. Jockey Robert Edens, who has ridden Lawless Miss in all of her recent engage-1 ments, turned in an impeccable ride, having all he could do to restrain her during the early running while she confidently jogged along in fourth position, about six lengths off of the pace being set by Lovely Trace. When the latter mare began to show signs of tiring rounding the final turn, Lawless Miss was then allowed to move forward on the outside, and in reach- ing the front coming to the final furlong pole, easily disposed of Lovely Trace and drew away from Spry Chic. She was eased up after Edens glanced over both shoulders to make certain that there was no contention, while Spry Chic wearied from his brief move with the winner and had to be hard ridden to resist Tubby B. The latter was second choice in the betting, but as usual, lacked early speed, and had insuf-I ficient time to get up in the stretch drive.
