Black Tarquin New Idol Of British Racing World American Colt Loudly Applauded After Recent Chippenham Score LONDON, England, May 6 Reuters. — William Woodwards St. Leger winner, Black Tarquin, has grown into a magnificent four-year-old and there was loud praise for him in the paddock before the Chippenham Stakes at Newmarket. A massive black animal, he was the admiration of all. He was admired even more after the way he ran his rivals out of the race, giving nearly a stone 14 pounds to the French colt, Tanagrello, who was runner-up in the French Derby last year and won recently in France. He was loudly applauded on his return to the paddock. Black Tarquin, who was having his first race of the season, was sweating a little before the race and looked to be in need of the effort, but for all that he was fit enough to beat the Frenchman and the splendid gelding, High Stakes. Black Tarquin can not have a superior at his age in the world today, and it will be surprising if this fine son of Rhodes Scholar is beaten this year. He looks a ready made winner of the Ascot Gold Cup. When he retires to the stud he should prove a great stallion. Chief rival among the British horses to this American - bred colt will be Solar Slipper and Alycidon. Solar Slipper has already given evidence of his condition by a clever win at Newbury. Alycidon, runner-up to Black Tarquin in the St. Leger, and subsequent winner of the King George VI. Stakes at Ascot, will make his debut this year next week at Chester.
