j Flag Drill Upset Victor In Governors Handicap Jockey Fisk Has Hartwick Racer On Top Throughout at Suffolk SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass.. May 7. — Clarence Hartwicks Flag Drill moved up a notch over last years attempt in the Governors Handicap and scored a well-earned victory at Suffolk Downs this afternoon before a crowd of 25,119 enthusiastic patrons including his honor, Gov. Paul A. Dever. The six-year-old son of Flint Shot saved the major portion of the ,500 added money by a half length over the fast charging Make-Up Man, who was sent here from New York by owner Mrs. Rea E. Warner. A neck further back, Marlet Stables Column finished third in a field of eight that were separated by three lengths from winner to the last horse. The entire program of the afternoon furnished thrilling finishes for the large crowd. The finish camera was called into action in each event from the second through the feature. With the exception of the triumph of Flag Drill either favorites or second choices proved successful. Flag drill was overlooked, despite winning his seasonal debut here in grand fashion, and paid 5.40. The mile event was traveled in l:393/5 over a fast racing strip. Flag Drill was sent to the van at once by jockey Billy Fisk and before entering the backstretch had moved to a comfortable two-length advantage over Sandy Strand Stables Manna H. Closely lapped behind this pair were Mesmer and Make-Up Man. Column was trailing the field but making up ground as the half-way mark was reached. Flag Drill continued to dominate as first Manna H., and then Mesmer drove close in their challenge. Mesmer appeared to have the race at his mercy as Fernandez sent the strawberry roan through on the inside turning into the home lane. Flag Drill was not to be denied and after shaking off Mesmers bid, withstood the challenge of Make-Up Man and Column that continued through the final 70 yards. Last year, Flag Drill finished second to George Babins Dockstader while well regarded, but more than made up for that by virtue of todays triumph.
