Hopkins Three Rings led from wire to wire in the 0,000 Queens County Handicap as Aqueduct opened its 18-day summer meeting today. Harry LaMon-tagnes Conniver finished fast, after being in difficulties near the far turn, to take second honors, four lengths behind the winner, while Bermill Farms Bug Juice was lapped on the big mare and more than two lengths before Short Brook Farms outsider, Strutin. Ted Atkinson rode Three Rings for the first time this year and the Blue Larkspur gelding returned 2.60 after stepping the mile and a sixteenth in 1:47% over a track that was deeper than in most recent seasons. • An opening day throng of 21,206 turned out in weather that cleared to bright sunshine before the first race, after having been overcast through the morning. The visitors found a refurbished track that showed abundant signs of the earnest effort that has been made to make the oldest of the Long Island courses a bower of beauty. Favorite players were rewarded with half a winner through the feature, Charioteer having finished in a dead heat with Equanimous in the hurdle race. Opens Up Daylight Lead When Atkinson kicked Three Rings out of the gate as the field for the Queens County left the machine directly in front of the stand, he quickly opened a daylight lead over Strutin and Bug Juice, who was on the inside rail. Rounding the clubhouse turn, the leaders were followed by Makeup Man, on the outside, Chains, Conniver, on the rail, Safe Arrival, Loser Weeper and Frankly. Three Rings continued to lead by a couple of lengths in the run down the far side, followed by Strutin, Safe Arrival, who moved up briskly on the outside, Bug Juice, Make -Up Man and Conniver. Arcaro attempted to send Conniver up on the rail nearing the far turn, but ran into a screen of horses and had to take back, while Make-Up man also faltered. Three Rings coasted around the turn to the stretch, with Strutin beginning to tire behind him, while Bug Juice moved up strongly. Arcaro took Conniver to the outside and set the big mare down for another bid coming into the home lane. Though gaining rapidly on the rest of the field, Conniver was unable to menace Three Rings, who drew away steadily under mild urging in the run to the finish. Bug Juice appeared to hang in the final strides, while Strutin turned in a good effort under light weight. Loser Weeper closed some ground, while Safe Arrival was through at the end of seven furlongs. Three Rings, who was scoring his fifth victory in 13 starts this year and was in the money in five other events, added 5,700 to his earnings. Conniver, returning to the scene of her brilliant triumphs in the Brooklyn, Vagrancy and Beldame Handicaps, showed improvement, and might have been much closer, but for her mishap at the five-furlong pole. C. V. Whitneys Jazz Baby surged through the stretch to take the Fairy Chant Purse that preceded the feature by four and a half lengths from Dell Stables Continued on Page Three : , [ ; , s Three Rings Leads Throughout In Queens County at Aqueduct Continued from Page One Flower Bed, the favorite, Piping By, finished a half length away after setting the pace, while Black Chiffon was two and a half lengths out of the money after trailing in the early stages of the seven furlongs. Retama and La Rimda completed the field. Clarence Picou rode one of his rare winners when he piloted Jazz Baby, who paid .10 as third choice. The time was a moderate 1:27% over the deep, safe track.
