All Have Single Aim To Win Derby Owners Trainers Riders in Limelight LimelightSketches Sketches of Personalities Having Part in Staging of Big Race at Churchill Downs DownsWinning Winning Derby s Is Nothing New For Mrs W right sCalu met Farm FarmMRS MRS WARREN WRIGHTS CALUMET FARM has had the Tare good fortune to have had four Derby winners to date and it might just be that Hill Gail would prove the fifth Writing about Calumet is like gilding the lily for it is perhaps and rightly so Americas best known breeding establishment and is the number one show place of America The farm was established in 1924 by the late Mr Wright The first Derby starter in the devils red and blue silks was Nellie Flag fourth in 1935 Bull Lea who was destined to become one of the most famous sires in the world was eighth in 1938 Of the ten thoroughbreds sent postward in the Derby by Calumet the four winners were Whirlaway in 1941 Pensive in 1944 Citation in 1948 his entry mate Coaltown was second and Ponder in 1949 this latter being the diamond ju ¬ bilee running Only one other owner has ever had as many as four Kentucky Derby winners that being the late Col E R Bradley Calumet consists of more than lOOff acres located on the Versailles Pike near Lexington It is managed by Paul Ebelhardt
