return to the form that enabled him to win the Champagne Stakes last fall when he captured the 77th running of the Withers Mile by three and a half lengths from Mrs Walter M Jeffords One Count It was another four lengths back to Starmount Stables Primate who led Cain Hoy Stables Top Bet by almost a length The disappointment of the race was John C Clark Charlie McAdam the favorite with the crowd of 37958 who faded badly and finished seventh seventhArmageddon Armageddon paid 2120 and was ridden by Ray York who swiveled in the saddle at the eighth pole in search of rivals He required 137 for the mile two and a fifth seconds slower than Count Fleets track record and one and a fifth more than the stakes mark shared by Snob n Man o War Hill Prince and Battlefield The son of Al sab Fighting Lady earned 22000 as he scored his first victory of the year on the eighth attempt and his first since winning the Champagne at the same track and dis ¬ tance last October Armageddon suffered an eye injury
