Driving Harness Horses Less Risky Than Riding Runners RunnersSANTA SANTA ANITA PARK Arcadia Calif Driving harness horses is not so dangerous as riding the runners Though the sulky men spill they seem seldom to be seriously injured not nearly so frequently as are jockeys The drivers are closer to the ground they dont have so far to fall Also the horses are traveling at about one fifth slower speed than the thoroughbreds pace Not only that but being perched on a sulky seems to give the driver a better opportunity to get in the clear out of the way of oncoming horses horsesFurthermore Furthermore the sulkys are often strung out in a line tandemlike whereas the runners bunch together togetherThere There have been three pileups here this season involving three drivers in the first two in the second and five in the third and all drivers escaped practically unhurt save one Ralph Estes who sustained a couple of broken ribs
