CONNORS CORNER BELMONT PARK Elmont L I N Y May 10 The coughing epidemic that anr nual scourge which shows up alone at this time of the year is of record breaking pro ¬ portions The full im ¬ pact of the disease can be visualized when on Friday morning but five twoyearolds were tested down the Wide ¬ ner course and a race designed for twoyear old maiden fillies failed to attract enough start ¬ ers to warrant placing the event on the pro ¬ gram Training operations on chute days are fairly heavy and two score or more youngsters are put through their paces The programming of a race designed for maiden twoyearold fillies is as a rule the signal for an avalanche of entries The abandon men of such an event is the tip off that the epidemic is sweeping Veterinarians scien ¬ tists and foundation researchists have studied this disease which is something akin to the nose colds in humans As a rule no harmful effects are encountered follow ¬ ing recovery which takes about 10 daysbut this year is the exception Following the first attack the youngsters are treated with medications and are not called upon for strenuous exercise This year the cough first showed up in Florida and then moved up the coast and apparently centered here Trainers report that they have suffered a couple of visits and many of the older horses are victims In addition to medica ¬ tions other types of treatment such as fluorescent bulbs electric germ detectors and other such gadgets were tried but to no avail The veterans insist that the bug is dust borne and that time and nature un ¬ less given an assist from science is the remedy However it plays havoc with the presentation of a racing program and if you dont believe it ask Jack Campbell in the secretarys office Joe R Strauss of San Antonio Texas was a visitor yesterday A few years ago he was an AllAmerican from the Univer ¬ sity of Pennsylvania Strauss has a few horses in training but plans to embark as a breeder in a year or two Frank Colti letti who is a traffic cop pony boy at the Jamaica track got his first experience with a runaway the other morning The pony and loose horse survived the deal but the former rider was winded Frank Hayes the better part of the afternoon in a discussion with John Hertz on breeding Charlie McAdam headed a delegation of a dozen or so to do some serious rooting for his namesake in the Withers John C Clark came down from Binghamton N Y for the big weekend Mrs Fifi Widener decided to remain over in Palm Beach for another month or so She has a draft of horses in training with Maje Odom Angle and Albion owned by the Addison Stable were shipped to the Woodbine Toronto Ont track for engagments at that point Trainer John Gaver said that Tom Fool is much better he coughed only twice yesterday and once today and also underwent some light can ¬ tering exercise Jockey Eddie Arcaro is due back from Pimlico to ride on Monday He went to that track to guide Real Delight for the Calumet Farm in the BlackEyed Susan Tommy Trotter has stakes nomi ¬ nation blanks and stall applications for the Centennial race course out Denver way in case you are interested interestedA A A A AThe The horses from this area will not start to converge on Pimlico for the Preakness until Thursday or so said Jack ODare who will van the majority of the starters from this point Isidore Bieber is studying folk lore He wishes to name a horse for the elder statesman Bernard Baruch master of Hobcaw Barony down in South Carolina E B Benjamin who races under the nom de course of the Starmount Stable was on hand for the Withers in which he was represented by Primate Jockey Ted Atkinson is the leading rider at this meet ¬ ing which by the way is not headlinenews The veteran has been up there most of the time Bob Boyle one of the veterans of the training profession reported that his charges are about ready for racing They were victims of the cough Art Kennedy will serve on the public address system at Waterford Park and following that meet ¬ ing serve as a placing judge at Randall Park ParkA A A A ATrack Track superintendent Boyle reported this morning that Belmont Park benefited by recent rains did not have to draw on the reserve water supply as in some other years BUI Gallagher the banking man from Seventh Avenue was among the early visi ¬ tors Morris Bernstein deserted the haute couturier for a looksee at some flashing racing colors Joe M Roebling came over from Trenton N J for the big race Major Albert Warner of the film industry reported on hand early and stated that he may make a trip to Hollywood Park for a few days during that meeting Herbert Bayard Swope recovered from laryngitis braved the unsettled weather for the after ¬ noon Nick Schenck of the theatrical world was on hand Allie Sylvester the retired tobacco man celebrated his natal day and admitted that it was over eighty Jack Skirvin in discussing the cough ¬ ing epidemic stated that every member of the menage but Blue Case was a victim This member of the Roebling menage he opined was too small and the germs passed her by
