Dateline Surprises In Suffolk Feature FeaturePrevails Prevails by Neck Margin Over Simms in Faneuil Hall Favored Abstract Runs Third ThirdBy By FRED GALIANI GALIANIStaff Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS East Boston Mass May 10 Dateline picked the right spot to win his first race of the year as the W L Huntley fiveyearold took the 5000 added Faneuil Hall Handicap here today by a neck over T W Smiths persistent Simms It was two lengths back to the heavily favored Abstract who finished on the extreme outside after trailing for the greater part of the race Tommy Mays Whirling Bat was fourth in the field of eight eightDateline Dateline had gone to the post 11 times previously this year and could not win a purse although he had been second and third frequently enough This past Mon ¬ day he was second to Sam H in an allow ¬ ance affair Today under Evan Jenkins who was riding the gelding for the first time Dateline returned 3620 and covered the mile and a sixteenth in 144 The failure of Abstract was a blow to the fa ¬ vorite players although they did manage to get three of their choices home up to this race raceHona Hona Massey made a repeat performance in the winners circle presenting a silver service set to trainer L J Keating after the race The blonde beauty had done the same act yesterday Keene who was astride Ab ¬ stract was roundly booed for his efforts and if you dont think they take baseball seri ¬ ously in this sector you should have heard the groans as the YankeeRed Sox score was announced over the loudspeaker im ¬ mediately after the race raceCrowd Crowd of 24852 on Hand HandDateline Dateline earned 3545 as his net share of the purse before a good Saturday crowd of 24852 who turned out oh a clear cool day to see the gelding win winAbstract Abstract who shared honors in this race last year with Lambent both finishing in a dead heat was the top weight at 118 pounds while Dateline got in with 107 pounds Before the race Jenkins had to hit Dateline a couple of times with his whip as they were preparing to get into the gate When the field broke it was the lightly weighted Simms in with 103 who spurted to the lead with Dateline and Regal right behind in that order Abstract breaking from the extreme outside was taken over to the rail in the rear of the van vanSimms Simms opened up a long lead around the turn and down the backstretch appar ¬ ently trying to steal the race while Date ¬ line and Regal were content to wait until he came back to them Abstract was still last in the run down the backstretch and not making up any ground at all At the half Simms had gone out to five lengths while Dateline was two ahead of Regal Rounding the turn Simms started to come back to his field and Dateline was sent up to challenge as Regal and Whirling Bat came closer to the leader Abstract was sent on the outside and began his belated move moveDateline Dateline yoked Simms straightening away for the drive home but DeSpirito kept after his mount and the two of them were in a close battle down the length of the stretch Abstract was far on the out ¬ side of the strip and it was hot a question of whether he was going to win but if he would even make a money position Within the final sixteenth Dateline had the best of Simms although the margin at the fin ¬ ish was no more than a neck Abstract just did get up to save the show money for the favorite players Tio Giro Sam H and Tilenny were never contenders in the race
