Southwest Group Raps Pressures7 Pressures7Two Two Texas Colleges Refused Membership Entry in Future Will Be by Invitation Only By ED FITE FITEUnited United Press Sports Writer WriterDALLAS DALLAS Tex May 10 The Southwest Conference turned thumbs on enlargement of its membership today took a rap at pressures as it did so and spelled out that henceforth expansion of the seven team loop will be by invitation only onlyJust Just as it did three years ago the con ¬ ference failed to act directly on the appli ¬ cations before it of Texas Tech and University of Houston but voted on a pro ¬ posal that the loop not expand at this time timeIn In a blunt statement which was not enlarged upon the conference faculty ath ¬ letic committee explained its action thusly thuslyIt It is the opinion of the conference that the pressure generated among members jand between areas of the state are not I conducive to continued harmonious rela jtions in the conference and would affect unfavorably any school which might have been added at this time j The conference will not consider any applications for membership in the future I Expansion will be by invitation only onlyI I Wont Divulge Pressure PressureNone None of the official conference family would divulge what pressure were in tvolved in its statement but it was gen ¬ erally known that persons inside and outside the conference have been waging a heated campaign on college presidents and governing bodies to vote this way or that thatProminent Prominent citizens of West Texas a vast area not represented by a conference school have for years been pushing Techs candidacy candidacyWithin Within recent months since Techs latest application became public knowledge the board of regents of the University of Texas and the board of directors of Texas A M publicly endorsed Techs admission Both are like Tech statesupported schools schoolsHoustons Houstons application had not aroused the heat that Techs supporters had mus ¬ tered and there was little or no pressure on that Missouri Valley Conference schools behalf behalfTech Tech faculty athletic council chairman Dr J William Davis boiled his reactions to todays move into four words We are very disappointed disappointedBut But not so Techs athletic director De Witt Weaver j who said As far as I am concerned we are going to get along all right I think that the action hurt the conference more than it did Texas Tech TechThe The conference is denying West Texas a chance to have Southwest Conference football We are going to provide the conference football We are going to pro ¬ vide possibleHe the best athletics possible He would not confirm that this state ¬ ment meant Tech was going all out to get athletes who might normally wind up on a Southwest Conference campus but it indicated Tech didnt intend to backslide in the matter of trying to build up the caliber of its teams
