* ► 4 Fly Wheel Charges to Surprise Victory in Rosemont Handicap • Reaches End of Mile Event At Belmont Neck Ahead of Isasmoothie Following Duel By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 21. — C. V. Whitneys Fly Wheel I charged to a surprising triumph in the , featured Rosemont Handicap today, reach- » ing the end of the mile a neck before I Brookfield Farms Isasmoothie, after a bit- ! ter struggle through the stretch. Warbern I Stables Sickles Sound was almost a length away in third place and a half length before Wheatley Stables Hilarious. I Hedley Woodhouse rode Fly Wheel, who • had been unable to win in five previous 1 attempts this year and the gray son of • Mahmoud — Flyweight paid 2.00 to his I scattered followers in the crow of 21,268. The race was run under comparatively • sunny skies and over a fast racing strip, - but the time for the mile was a dull 1:39. I Hilarious Away Slowly Hilarious, who had beaten Fly Wheel by five lengths in his last start, while merely breezing six furlongs in 1:10%, was away slowly when George Cassidy gave the word today, but quickly rushed into the lead. Emardee, who has taken a brief lead in the first furlong, was lapped on the Bime-lech colt in the run to the far turn, closely followed by Chief Fanelli and Impasse, while there was a wide gap back to Bradley, Fly Wheel, Isasmoothie and Sickles Sound. Hilarious widened his lead rounding the Continued on Page Forty-Three Fly Wheel Charges Home Neck on Top at Belmont Surprises in Beating Isasmoothie Oyer Mile of Rosemont Handicap Continued from Page One far turn until he was daylight before Emar-dee, while going along at a moderate clip, with Chief Fanelli still in third place, but, beginning to shorten stride. Nearing the three-furlong pole. Fly Wheel moved up rapidly on the outside, while Sickles Sound closed ground, but Isasmoothie was still far back and Bradley dropped back to last place, apparently unable to negotiate the deeper going on the rail. Hilarious began to falter after going three-quarters in a moderate 1:12 and racing wide, while Fly Wheel surged up abruptly with Isasmoothie in his wake, while Sickles Sound was also closing well on the inside. Woodhouse and McCreary sat down to ride their hardest on Fly Wheel and Isasmoothie as the pair hooked up at the furlong pole, but the Mahmoud colt outfinished his rival, inching away a bit in the final strides. Sickles Sound finished fairly well, as Hilarious tired badly and Bradley came on again in the stretch to finish two lengths off the board in fifth place. Isasmoothie was slightly favored over Hilarious in the final phase of the wagering. Montpeliers Sea Legs scored his fourth straight steeplechase victory when he out-finished Rigan McKinneys pacemaking Hot by a half length in the Corinthian Handicap. The stirring struggle was only of academic interest to the players as Sea Legs and Hot were coupled in the wagering, paying .40 and .80, with no show betting. Brookmeade Stables His Boots was another five lengths away at the end of about two miles, while F. Ambrose Clarks The Creek was the only other to finish, coming in another 25 lengths late. Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs The Mast fell at the next-to-last fence, sending Bob McDonald sailing through the air. The boy landed heavily and was carried to the waiting ambulance on a stretcher. McDonald escaped with a slight concussion and a bruised nose and eyes, but refused hospitalization. Wheatley Stables Flapper, a daughter of Challedon-Drumuir, by Snark, who had raced once obscurely, returned 09.30, 8.20 and 2 across the board to her few backers, after winning the fourth race by a half length over Yolo Stables Michikee. Foxcatcher Farms Fayfran was a distant third at the end of five furlongs in :582s, after bearing over soon after the start and crowding several of her rivals, not, however, including Woodvale Farms favored Your Stockings. That miss, who finished eighth, had no apparent excuse
