BRIEFS 56,000 Idle in Auto Strikes DETROIT, Mich., May 21. — Mushrooming auto strikes idled more than 56,000 auto workers in the Midwest today, including 37,500 in the Detroit area. Ford Motor Co., with 7,900 already idled, said 85,000 of its 12S,000 hourly-rated employes across the country would be laid off by Monday. Rhee Asks Air Aid for South Korea SEOUL, Korea, May 21. — South Korean president Syngman Rhee appealed to the Allies today to give him an air force strong enough to support his growing ground army, but U. S. leaders said any such action is unlikely under the present conditions. Rhee, in a brief speech after he had awarded military merit medals to two U. S. jet aces, expressed hope that the United I I Nations would "give us air strength proportionate to our land strength." See National Sales Tax WASHINGTON, D. C, May 21.— Some congressmen saw the possibility of a national sales tax today in President Eisenhowers warning that he may have to ask for new revenue sources if world tensions do not ease soon. Speculation regarding this prospect arose as congressional leaders gained some ground in their drive to fill Mr. Eisenhowers request for a six-month extension of the excess profits tax. Reds Attack Near Hanoi HANOI, Indochina, May 21. — Communist forces struck at French outposts in the Red River Delta today as French defenders braced themselves for a new Red assault against the vital Hanoi area. Elements of several Viet Minn battalions launched harassing attacks on French positions at widely separated spots inside the delta defenses south of here during the night. Big Three Parley Set for Late June WASHINGTON, D. C, May 21.— President Eisenhower today called a meeting with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and French Premier Rene Mayer which could lead to a Big Four world peace conference with Russia later. The Big Three parley probably will be held in Bermuda late in June. Churchill said some time after June 15. France, Saar Sign Pact PARIS, France, May 21. — France and the Saarland have signed a pact increasing the Saars autonomy and strengthening Frances hand in the showdown diplomatic battle with Germany for the coal-rich area. The pact, signed at the Foreign Office here, modified the close economy ties between France and the Saar government, it was announced. Urge Air Force Academy WASHINGTON, D. C, May 21.— The administration is ready to press Congress for action on the long-stalled project to create a military academy for the Air Force, Pentagon sources said today. The Defense Department is expected to send a message to Congress soon urging that legislation be passed establishing an Air Force Academy of equal standing with the Armys West Point and the Navys Annapolis.
