Martinez Faces Giovanelli Tonight Ten-Rounder Being4 r Telecast Nationally Vince Pits Punching Power Against Opponents Speed In Scrap Between Welters By JACK CUDDY United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, N. Y., May 21.— Handsome . Vince Martinez, a bobby-sox idol who was somewhat shattered, starts his comeback tomorrow night in a television fight with dangerous Danny Giovanelli at Madison Square Garden. This 10-rounder between two explosive young welterweights will bring boxing back to the big punch emporium after an absence of seven weeks. Martinez, of Paterson, N. J., will be making his first start since March 13, when he lost an upset decision to Chico Vejar. Since then Vince quit his job as draftsman for Westinghouse and concentrated on boxing as his sole vocation. He was favored today to beat Giovanelli of Brooklyn, but there is expected to be plenty of support for flashy, aggressive Danny in his first Garden main event. Their bout will be televised and broadcast nationally at 10 p. m. EDT, and it shapes up as a good one because of their youth, styles and steam. Each is an upright fighter, but 24-year-old Martinez prefers to lay back .And counter -punch. He feints an opponent into leading, and then counters with smashing combinations. Promise Different Fighter Tonight The Paterson lad with the wavy dark hair and classic profile tired in several rounds with Vejar in March because he was not in proper condition. The double effort of working as a draftsman and training as a fighter left him stale. Co-managers Bill Daly and Tex Pelte agree: "Youll see a different Martinez this time. Hes in the pink." Lanky, black-haired Giovanelli is an aggressive sharpshooter who attacks persistently at long range. Hes an expert with the right cross. He will be 21 next Monday. And he has had but 21 professional bouts. However, he is a great prospect— perhaps even more promising than Martinez because of his superior speed. Martinez, "rookie-of-the-year" in 1952, has lost but two of his 29 professional bouts. He was beaten in March by Vejar, and in his 14th bout by one Joe Mullens. He has knocked out 15. Giovanelli also lost two in his 21. He knocked out nine, and has a winning streak of 11. He was particularly impressive on March 2, when he knocked out the previously unbeaten Danny Joe Perez in the sixth round at Brooklyns Eastern Parkway arena. That triumph earned him the Martinez fight when Chico Vejar was called into the Army and was unable to go through with a return Martinez match at the Garden tomorrow night. Martinez, although an inch shorter than Brooklyn Danny, will outweigh him slightly, at about 148 pounds to Dannys 146.
