r ♦ Athletics Blank Red Sox, 9-0; Shantz Pulls Shoulder Muscle Ace Southpaw Leaves Game After Retiring Two Bosox Batters in Fourth Inning By JACK FROST United Press Sports Writer j BOSTON, Mass., May 21. — Carl Scheib, , summoned for emergency service when pitcher Bobby Shantz injured his arm, got his first hit of the year today — a two-run single that set the pace for the Philadelphia Athletics to humble the Boston Red /Sox by a 9-0 score. Scheib showed up with two out in the -fourth inning, when Shantz, most valuable player in the American League last year, • pulled a muscle in his left shoulder and was forced to retire. Sammy White was the batter and the count was two balls and | no strikes. He walked, but Scheib forced . the next man to fly out, and gave up only two hits in the remaining 5 1-3 innings ; of the game. Maury McDermott had a no-hitter going for five innings until Joe DeMaestri singled in the sixth and scored Joe Astroth, who had walked. He lasted for one out in the seventh inning, in which the Athletics got five runs. Hershell Freeman came in to finish the game and was pounded hard for six hits and four runs. Bases Loaded Three Times Singles by Cass Michaels, Ed MchGee, Scheib, Pete Suder and Ed Robinson, together with three walks, accounted for the five runs in the seventh. The Athletics loaded the bases three times. In the ninth they scored three more runs on singles by DeMaestri, Suder and Gus Zernial, two walks and an error. The Red Sox got only three hits, one off Shantz and the others off Scheib. The most serious woes of the As was the injury to their diminutive 27-year-old hurler, who has had a poor season this year after having compiled a 24-7 record last season. He had pitched only one-third of an inning here previously — July 10, 1949 — and was going well in his second start at Fenway Park until he faced White. He said he felt his shoulder muscle pain on the first fast ball he threw. Ie became unbearably painful when he threw his second fast ball. Shantz was to undergo treatment here for 24 hours and then be sent home for medical care. Score by innings: R H E PHILADELPHIA 000 001 503—9 11 1 BOSTON 000 000 000—0 3 1 E — Michaels, Consolo.
