Thasian Hero in Garden State Upset ♦ McKnight Runner Is Home in Clear Downs Roman Rocket by Two and Half Lengths; Rope Trick Victorious By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK. Camden, N. J., May 21. — John L. McKnights Thasian j Hero gave another of his dependably honest performances here this afternoon, and it was good enough to score an upset in the featured Philco Purse by two and one-half lengths. H. P. Metcalf s Roman Rocket, giving an even more surprising performance as the longest shot of the seven-horse field, held on to be second with a nose margin over Hampton Stables Easy Whirl. The favorite, Brandywine Stables Referee, failed to gain appreciably when called upon and finished fourth. Robert Louis Stevenson, who has not seen much action at this meeting, was astride the winning six-year-old son of Attention and Thasos who was timed the mile and a sixteenth over a fast track in an excellent 1:44. Those favoring his chances received 5.00 as the fifth choice of the band. William G. Helis, Jr.s Roman Fair, installed second pick of the bettors despite the withdrawal of his stablemate, Evicted ran a poor last. Play Toy Disappoints Emerald Isle Stables Rope Trick was up for a surprise victory in the Fashion Purse, defeating John L. McKnights Play Toy by half a length to return 6.40. Jockey Charles Burr had difficulty bringing the winning son of Mahmoud around Play Toy in the drive as he drifted in behind the latter while making his charge. Burr pulled mightily on the reins, however, and had him up from the outside in the final yards. It was the second score for Burr, who had won the second race with H. M. Bosh-amers Dove Tint. The latter paid .00, and completed a 7.80 Daily Double begun by Carolyn K Stables Gnu. The crowd of 18,449 had two winning favorites in the early races, and had their pleasure heightened with a fashion show staged. The weather was on the chilly side. Jockey Jimmy Stout was going in great style today, with three victories in his pocket after the fifth race. It was almost a perfect score, he having finished second with his only other early mount. A. J. Fralingers Bob o Boy supplied his third triumph, drawing out under the left-hand whipping of Stout to be a length in front of Mrs. Max Kahlbaums favored War-donna. The winning son of Platter had been defeated by several of his rivals in prior outings here, but shrewd trainer William S. Cotton had him on his toes today to have posted a 5.60 mutueL
