Contreras Succumbs to Ring Injuries Suffered Last Week PROVIDENCE, R. I., May 9 UP.— Middleweight Jose Contreras of Taunton, Mass., died today, the second New England . boxer to succumb to ring injuries in less than five months. Contreras, 28, was hurt last Monday in a bout with Bob Bolton of Providence. Contreras was technically knocked out in ; the eighth round of a scheduled 10-lounder. Contreras had been in a coma the past t five days. Hospital authorities said he suffered • a brain injury. Last December, Eddie Sanders, San i Diego, Calif., heavyweight, died of injuries 3 suffered in a Boston bout with Willie ; James of Boston, New England heavyweight - champion. Brain specialists performed a two-hour r operation on Contreras in an effort to save i his life. A blood clot was removed and for r a time it appeared he might rally. Police said Bolton will be charged with i technical manslaughter.
