I, I Determine Fails to Lose i; . Caste in Loss to Alidon h I Crevolin Gray Right With Winner , I To Whom He Gave 17 Pounds j j GOLDEN GATE FIELDS, Albany, Calif., i j May 9. — The record books will show that | Louis B. Mayers Alidon was winner of the ■ ninth running of the Golden Gate Handi- i cap here last Saturday and he turned in no ordinary performance to achieve the j victory, but those who watched the 0,000 I , spectacle lost no regard for the runner-up I i j Determine, Andy Crevolins diminutive star. j , Alidon turned in what may be the fastest « mile and a quarter of the year — 1 : 59% — to I I get home in front, but Determine, who was [ spotting him 17 pounds, was right on top of him as they flashed under the wire. Third to complete the ten furlongs was Neil S. McCarthys Novarullah and the Hel-bush Farms Santa Anita Handicap winner ; | Poona II. was fourth. King Ranchs Re- • jected, who was the favorite, turned in j • I probably the poorest performance of his | life and was a distant last. Only five I ! . I started. J ] Determine packed 129 pounds, the great- j I 1 est weight ever shouldered by a starter in i the Golden Gate Handicap, and it was just I too much, by a half length to get him 3 home. The Crevolin four-year-old, who was i i celebrating the first anniversary of his vic- tory in the Kentucky Derby, gamely went after the front-running Alidon in the run through the final straightaway, but under the expert handling of Johnny Longden, a terror on a speed horse, the Mayer color- bearer lasted. Alidon took command soon after leaving the chute at the head of the stretch with Poona II. second, Determine third, Nova- t rullah fourth and Rejected last. In these i relative positions the field raced to the stretch turn. At this point Poona II. began to give ground and Determine, under the call of Ray York, made his move. Entering the last quarter Determine and « Novarullah passed Poona II. and it looked . to many that the Crevolin colt might also J overtake Alidon, but it just wasnt in him to accomplish that feat at the weights. No credit, however, can be taken from ■ Alidons performance, for he set a dizzy . pace and still had the staying powers to , withstand Determine s bold challenge. The Mayer horse ran the first quarter in :22%, the half in :46, three-quarters in 1:09% , and the mile in 1:34%. At the end of the trip Determine was a length and a half in front of Novarullah ! who, in turn, beat Poona U. by about the same margin. Rejected refused to extend : himself at any stage of the race and even- | tually was beaten almost 15 lengths. The race carried a guaranteed gross i value of 0,000 and of that sum a net of [ 9,325 went to the winner. |
