Clifford Lusskys Federal Hill as the news picture shifted rapidly here in the heart of racine conscious Kentucky with the imminent approach of Saturdays 83rd running of Amer icas premier turf prize However Gen Duke is stm considered a likely starter in the Derby Early this afternoon Vern Martin co owner with John Appelbaum in whose name the horse has been running of Mister Jive phoned Churchill Downs offi ¬ cials and announced that because of Gen Dukes injury the Mr Music colt would leave by plane from Newark airport in New Jersey at 7 a m Thursday and arrive in Louisville at about 9 a m to been engaged to handle Gallant Man ManThus Thus as of this writing 10 and possibly 11 horses may be entered when the Derby box closes at 930 Thursday morning Last night at the annual dinner of the Ken was second in the Trial but didnt run his race and on the word of jockey Bill Hartack was as straight as a string at the wire The son of Bull Lea and Wist ¬ ful bobbled while being cooled out last night and upon examination it was found that he had suffered a bad bruise on the heel of the foot footThis This morning trainer Jimmy Jones who at first had feared a separation of thej hoof or a condition somewhat resembling a quarter crack asked Dr Alex Harthill to take an immediate Xray and make a It was learned this afternoon from Bay Meadows race track in San Mateo Calif that Jones had phoned a local horseshoer Bob Deponte for two special plates presumably for Gen Duke They are en route to Churchill Downs by air mail special delivery diagnosis The vet using portable equip ¬ ment got his picture in short order and identified a dark spot as a bruise near the wall of the hoof hoofThe I The colt who had been poulticed last night had his foot in a whirlpool bath of hot water for an hour and a hah this morning and was to receive similar treat ¬ ment this afternoon Late this morning with the barn radio blaring the news of Gen Dukes mishap Jones observed to this reporter Weve got to localize the thing first find where it is and then Harthill can draw the pus out Once that happens the pressure will be relieved and the foot could come around very rapidly rapidlyIve Ive seen these things before and they can respond overnight Of course time is against us with only a few days to go be ¬ fore the Derby but hes certainly fit for the race and could gallop on Saturday morning That would be all hed need I was tentatively planning to breeze him a slow halfmile on Friday but I dont be ¬ lieve it would be necessary necessaryThe The injury undoubtedly affected his last two races He took a couple of dainty steps at Lexington and when we had him reshod after that race at Keeneland I thought we had the situation cleared up completely It could be a stone bruise or have resulted from slamming down on that part of the heel But in any case Ill be able to tell you more tomorrow morning morningSince Since it costs only 250 to pass the entry box Jones will in all probability enter Gen Duke under any circumstances If he can find the pus pocket and there may not be much pus to relieve the pressure there seems little reason why the colt cannot produce a big race raceAs As for Iron Liege who turned in a thor ¬ oughly disappointing effort in the Trial Jones says the Bull Lea Iron Maiden colt acted sharp before the race and may have been thrown off by his first competi ¬ tive appearance over the Churchill Downs strip Jones implied without so saying that Iron Liege might show better on Sat ¬ urday urdayAt At the Trial winners barn trainer Mil ¬ ton Rieser was walking the highly popular and locally owned Federal Hill who seemed in rare good spirits A solitary newsman matching strides with the veteran horse man and the Cosmic Bomb colt around the long shedrow learned that Rieser consid ¬ ered Bold Ruler probably the horse to beat in the Derby Rieser whose fine work with Federal Hill last year and this season has gener ¬ ally been overlooked also had some inter ¬ esting ideas about the colts races in Flor ¬ ida this past winter The Kentuckian said his horse seemed to have some difficulty in breathing the warm Miami air and has run best in cooler weather weatherFederal Federal Hill turned in an excellent ef ¬ fort in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs last November and obviously likes the track although Rieser added that he would prefer mud for Sat ¬ urday urdayLast Last night at the KTBA dinner Rieser observed that the Trial in his opinion was Federal Hills best race this year The colt was clocked in 136 Vs for the mile and gal ¬ loped out the full mile and onequarter Derby distance in 204 only fourfifths of a second off Needles winning effort last year At the same time it must be noted that Federal Hill required 25M for the final quarter of the mile Trial which would indicate that he may have been thing slightly despite his handy two and one half lengths triumph triumphIndian Indian Creek to Represent Rice Stable Jimmy Conway cornered at Barn 14 by the dawns early light was pleased as he should have been with Indian Creeks race yesterday The wellconditioned son of Olympia was in tight quarters along the rail at the finish which prevented jockey George Taniguchi from urging him to the maximum yet he still closed a Strong fourth only a neck and onehalf length off the place horse Indian Creek who stripped splendidly in the paddock reflecting the patience and care with which he has been brought along by the able Conway is en ¬ tirely eligible to improve off the Trial and could be dangerous on Saturday SaturdayYou You cant write off Gen Duke in the Derby Conway noted and we know Bold Ruler is a rough customer It should be a particularly tough race because several of the others also have excellent chances chancesBetter Better Bee who probably ran the second biggest race in the Trial came out in excellent condition according to his 37 yearold conditioner Del Carroll despite bpbbling on some uneven ground near the eighth pole The Triplicate colt who had been lightly regarded by most observers prior to the Trial was easily the best look ¬ ing horse in the paddock and probably girths biggerlhan any Derby candidate candidateCarroll Carroll owner Miller and jockey Johnny Adams were particularly pleased with the way that Better Bee came on again to be third in view of the fact that his rider was forced to check him momentarily The colt passed the wire sandwiched in between Indian Creek on the rail and Gen Duke on the outside and was only a neck behind the Calumet star starHes Hes a shifty sort of horse Carroll said this morning One who can adapt himself to almost any situation I think hell im prove off the trial and he has such a pleasant disposition that hes easy to train Easy or not Carroll has done fine work with this colt who could continue to surprise a lot of people on Saturday A for ¬ mer polo player Carroll has attracted much favorable comment from local horse ¬ men who regard him as one of the most able of our younger trainers trainersTennessee Tennessee Wright sent Shan Pac seven furlongs in 128 this morning as the Shannon n colts final Derby prep Wright feels his colt is tight enough but is hoping for heavy mud to hamper the speed horses since his tiger prefers it best from well off the pace The colorful Wright Americas leading trainer of 1956 thinks that Bold Ruler Round Table and Geri Duke will provide the toughest opposition in the Derby DerbyJ J Ralph Adams will ride in view of the fact that Shoemaker has accepted the en ¬ gagement aboard Gallant Man Shoe rode Shan Pac to be fourth in the Florida Derby while young Adams was second with the colt in the Louisiana Derby DerbyJack Jack Williams who is training Round Table in the absence of his regular condi ¬ tioner Willie Molter had the Princequillo colt out for a sixfurlong spin accomplished in 113 Ralph Neves was aboard Round Table who didnt go quite as fast as was expected by his interests There seems to be some question as to whether or not the West Coast invader will handle the Churchill Downs strip a question which was not answered by his outing today todayMr Mr Fitz once again the center of atten ¬ tion among an admiring group of turf writers at the end of his shedrow at Barn 16 observed that because of the results of Bold Ruler took to the track this afternoon between the third and fourth races and worked an eyecatching six furlongs in 111 under a good hold by exercise boy Tommy Quinn The son of Nasrullah and Miss Disco who gal ¬ loped out seven panels in 125 prob ¬ ably insured his favoritism in the Derby with this move particularly in view of Gen Dukes indisposition Bold Ruler who raced a good six feet off the rail was clocked in fractions of 23 for the quarter 46 for the half and 59 for five furlongs the Trial the Derby was now a wide open race He also added significantly that he didnt believe Bold Rulers speed cost him the decision in any previous defeats nor did he figure it would do so on Saturday SaturdayBAYxSMEADOWS BAYxSMEADOWS San Mateo Calif May 1 Gen Duke is slated to tote a pair of front shoes in
