Maryland 1 By Teddy Cox Plan Many Improvements to Laurel Grandstand Cascarella Points Out Family Interest in Sport All in Racing Should Have Confidence in Future FutureLAUREL LAUREL MdvMay 1 Joseph T Cascarella ex ¬ ecutive vicepresident and secretary of the Maryland State Fair Inc reports that all members of the execu ¬ tive staff in the operation of Laurel will get a break Sunday Theyll have p day off Immedi ¬ ately after this breather another facelifting job will begin on a course that already has made major improvements The 3000 000 clubhouse is of course fabu ¬ lous and the description is of Maryland rather than Hollywood Cascarella reveals that the major operation coming up will be for the benefit of the grandstand devotee with a new entrance tile flooring new light ¬ ing system and an escalator listed on the agenda The entire program is to be completed in time for the fall meet Joe is a former big league baseball figure having pitched for the Philadelphia Athletics Boston Red Sox Washington Senators and Cincinnati Redlegs during his diamond career He also traveled the Orient in company with the immortal Babe Ruth Lou Gehrig Jimmy Foxx and company but since he abandoned the sport has become intensely interested in thorough ¬ bred racing racingProgress Progress Keyed to Public Relations RelationsDuring During the off season Cascarella serves as an am ¬ bassador for racing in general and Laurel in par ¬ ticular He is of the belief that the sport will progress along with the forward movement of public relations which he maintains is still the weakest link Without attempting to point a finger in any certain direction explains this scholarly gentleman there are too many in our profession who tend to make apologies for rac ¬ ing and I dont think any apologies are required The rapid growth of racing in recent years speaks for itself Much of this traces to the family interest that has developed in the healthy invigorating outdoor sport sportThere There are tracks around the country who operate their meetings as if each day will be the last Certainly there is no basis for such an attitude and this type of thinking tends to impede the progress of racing in general Those of us in the Laurel organization believe in preparing for the future We are proud of our club ¬ house and we hope to be as pardonably proud of our granstand area when this improvement is completed We have a great deal of confidence in the future of Maryland racing racingBrandywine Brandywine Trio Shipped to Stanton StantonLaurel Laurel Lingo V W Buddy Raines departed for New York after making preparations to ship three horses to the Brandywine Farm at Stanton Del They are Devilfish Countermand and Cannon Fire The latter finished third in the recent Chesapeake Stakes Raines says the horses will be kept in training and if any races prove attractive either in New York or Gar ¬ den State they will be vanned from the farm Raines has a division of the Donald P Ross unit in New York Big Jack Dwyer a member of the official staff at Lincoln Downs employed Laurel as the first point of a missionary tour He is seeking nominations for the 50000 Lincoln Special closing stakes event of the meeting at the New England course Another missionary is Lando Sixty Bressan who is attempting to interest horsemen in the ThistleDown meeting Charlie McLennan who is to be the director of racing at Arlington and Washington Park says several new stables from the East plan to ship out for those lush sessions Among these will be the 22horse unit super ¬ vised by Colin McLeod of Upperville Va Stars of the stable are Besomer and OBair Speaking of the Ken ¬ tucky Derby McLennan says You cant help but respect Round Table His last race was very impressive but Ive got to string with Gen Duke His race in the Florida Derby was one of the greatest ever shown by a threeyearold threeyearoldWhen When Eldon Nelson threatened to record four win ¬ ners on the eightrace program here earlier in the week one of the wiseacres of the press quipped Looks like hes going to take a halfnelson on the game Amory Hoskell who recently announced the retire ¬ ment of his fine handicap mare Blue Sparkler was a visitor The full sisters Humbug three and Scin ¬ tilla five were recent winners on the same program They are daughters of Endeavour II Decoy by Aethelsten II and were bred by R A Dick Johnston Humbug still flashes his silks but Scintilla races in the interest of William A Zakoor i Our press part ¬ ner Palmer Heagerty picks Iron Liege in the Kentucky Derby The young man who is generally regarded as one of the best race callers and observers thinks Iron Liege this time will be a true shot at beating his stabiemate Gen Duke When Heagerty was calling em j in Florida he said Irori Liege was usually paving the way for Gen Duke He doesnt believe Bold Ruler is capable of beating either of the Calumet aces over the searching mile and onequarter Chicago tracks wont take no for an answer and they still have hope that the William Hal Bishop stable will return to the scene of its greatest successes Bishops horses are presently at Garden State Park
