OriffieTlit I By MORRIE KURLANSKY 1 3 3Beissinger Beissinger Scores Fine Triple Takes Lead in Driver Standings Cartnal Wins Successive Races RacesMAYWOOD MAYWOOD PARK Maywood 111 May 1 Tuesday nights ninerace program at Maywood Park while offering no outstand ¬ ing events neverthe ¬ less was remarkable for the fact that Harry Burright a longtime favorite with Chicago area harness fans scored a fine triple vic ¬ tory to take over lead ¬ ership in the standings of the lT0odd drivers competing at this meeting The 42year old trainer one of the most talented reins men in the country is now credited with 13 victories two more than his closest pursuers Ohioans Joe Lighthill and Ed ¬ ward Morgan Whether Harry will be able to wind up as the leading driver of the Maywood Park session which closes June 1 is doubtful since the calibre of horses he usually drives is for the most part of little better than average quality and with the exception of some outside mounts Harry is usually not found in the lineup of freeforall events eventsThere There is no doubt that Harry would have a much better win percentage if he did not drive so many C and B class horses but the way he brings the best out of these sometimes superannu ¬ ated sometimes patchedup trotters and pacers is simply admirable It is almost impossible to pin down his style of driv ¬ ing but there can be no doubt that he has few masters in rating a horse and it is uncanny how he is able to find a position on the rail for his mounts thus saving valuable ground which is of the utmost importance on a halfmile track where four turns have to be negotiated negotiatedThe The most amazing thing about Harry is his iron constitution While he leads all drivers at this meeting in number of starts namely 88 or exactly four per night he was the fourth busiest driver in the nation his 722 drives topped only by Stanley Dancer Billy Haughton and Bud Gilmour Most likely Harry would have surpassed these New York aces if he hadnt incurred a lengthy suspension at the Magnolia Park spring meeting For the last three seasons Harry was among the 10 leading dash win ¬ ners in the nation winning a total of 290 races in a threeyear period periodTuesday Tuesday night was typical for Harry as far as the number of his starts and the kind of horses he drove are con ¬ cerned He had six mounts and none of these horses was in a higher classifica ¬ tion than group B Harry won two claim ¬ ing races of the 1000 variety with W J Paisleys sevenyearold gelding Man ¬ uscript an erratic and nottoosound pacer and Elmer Conrads 10yearold pacing gelding Dewey Pointer In be ¬ tween these two races he finished sec ¬ ond with A J Strauss trotting mare Miss Mary Dean in a Cclass event eventAfter After finishing out of the money with Elmer Conrads trotting mare Sis Neal Hairy gave a fine exhibition of reinsman ship when he captured the cofeatured B class trot with the promising mare Anna Reed The Wayward daughter lost a lot of ground on account of a break in the early stages of the race but Harry caught up with the field nearing the quarter pole andv before making his attack on the lead ¬ ing Doctor Athlone a horse he drove to many victories in pastseasons gave Anna Reed a breather around the final turn to win going away in the last 20 yards yardsKen Ken Cartnal shared the limelight with Harry on Tuesday night as he won suc cessive races with Caro Tass and Lord Marion C respectively both horses owned by William Lachenmaier of Shafter Calif Especially the green pac ¬ ing gelding Caro Tass impressed a fairly large crowd which had installed the fiveyearold a 12 choice on account of two previous victories here and at Santa Anita The black gelding followed the swift pace set by Tuffy Grattan until the sixteenth pole to easily overtake the Wisconsin pacer in the final strides for a splendid 206 victory the time one of the best ever recorded here in a 24class Howard Beissinger currently suffering one of the worst slumps in his career fig ¬ ured in two transactions yesterday First he bought the excellent pacing mare Miss Creedabelle a winner here in 203 for 10000 from Kenneth Boring The mare was Immediately shipped to New York where she will race at Yonkers Raceway in charge of trainer Jim Dennis In the other transaction Beissinger received the free forall pacer Scotchlite from K D Owen Th Scotland gelding was formerly trained by Harry Fitzpatrick
