Urges Connecticut Legislature Jo Adopt Harness Racing Bill BillHARTFORD HARTFORD Conn May 1 Alfred M Phillips Jr a former Connecticut congress ¬ man and once mayor of Stamford has urged the legislature in this state to adopt a bill permitting harness racing with pari mutuel wagering He made his request through a state senator from New Milford Republican Benjamin Barringer asking him to urge the judiciary committee to take favorable action on a bill now be ¬ fore it Phillips told Barringer in a letter that he represents a group of responsible citizens prepared to invest two million dollars in a night harness racing venture at no cost to the track The excongressman pointed out that a tremendous amount of money is wagered by Connecticut residents at New York Rhode Island and Massachusetts tracks This money he claims would be wagered in Connecticut if the opportunity were available availableSeveral Several previous efforts to legalize pari mutuel wagering in Connecticut have been defeated by past legislatures Phillips esti ¬ mated harness racing would give the state additional revenue of from one and a half to two million dollars
