In The Blue Grass By Hugh J McGuk Differences Over Yearling Stable Space Big Sales Companies Should Be Concerned Ebelhardt Anent Early Florida Training TrainingLEXINGTON LEXINGTON Ky May 1 In the recent announce ¬ ment by Louis Lee Haggin II president of the Keene land Association that this organization would build four new barns on the Keeneland property for the convenience of sales yearlings Paul Ebelhardt manager of Calumet Farm saw a great contrast to the recent re ¬ port that James Donn would not provide stalls for Calumet at Gulfstream next year There would seem to be a difference of opinion as to where the emphasis was placed in the Donn report as published in this paper In this account Donn gave the reasons for barring Calumet and other outfits as the failure o those stables to remain at the track until the end of the meeting Donn also mentioned a tightening of restrictions against the number of yearlings that would be granted stall space Some reports stressed this part of Donns statement statementAs As Calumet had followed its regular routine and brought its horses to Keeneland before the Gulfstream meeting closed Ebelhardt took the issue to be one of stabling room for yearlings Following this reasoning Ebelhardt said the big sales companies should be more concerned over such curtailment of yearling space than Calumet which had its own sixfurlong training track on the farm He pointed out that it was well established that many yearling buyers were limiting their purchases because they could not get stall space spaceCalumets Calumets Record Supports Jones Theory TheoryEbelhardt Ebelhardt stated that Ben Jones believes it im portant that young horses travel with the racing stable both for education and to permit the trainer to watch them closely as they develop Certainly Jones has had success with this practice Ebelhardt believes that this success is later shared with the tracks when good horses appear on the race programs and that the sales companies should ask the tracks to make a contribu ¬ tion to the industry and to their own future programs by supplying training tracks in Florida for young horses Such tracks are provided in some other areas areasIf If necessary part of the cost of upkeep could be defrayed by stall rentals Just how such a plan as this would sit with Florida breeders or Kentucky trainers who break young horses we do not know Efielhardt believes that if young horses were kept close to the trainers that not only would owners buy more yearlings but that they would not be so anxious to start them prematurely to get relief from long training bills in the north He reasons that race tracks should help defray the cost of future stars after the manner in which baseball supports farm clubs If Ben Jones did not pioneer the practice of racing Kentucky Derby eligibles in Florida he certainly lent impetus to the idea with Lawrin in 1938 and the Calumet winners since that date Prior to that time very few of the leading stables raced during the winter The change in tactics has been a great boon to Florida race programs and Ebelhardt feels that the Florida tracks should contribute training tracks if only to insure that they have good programs in the future futureJust Just how much effect if any the four hew barns to be built at Keeneland will have on the training of young horses there is questionable The proposal to erect the barns was made with the purpose of aiding in the handling of yearlings to be sold rather than in their training later No policy has been set at this time that might permit any interlocking of the two enter ¬ prises prisesReinemans Reinemans to Host Monmouth Party PartyBlades Blades of Blue Grass Mr and Mrs David Werblia Townsend B Martin and Edward Brennan of Mon mouth Park
