California 1 By Kent Cochran Deadline for ReAppraisal of Juveniles Kyne Handicap Motion Pictures Analyzed Pampasland Queens for Hollywood Park ParkBAY BAY MEADOWS San Mateo Calif May 1 This is the time of year when western horsemen reappraise their juveniles with an eye to making the stayeligible payment for the Del Mar Futurity and Debutante Many of those nominated last year as yearlings have been tried and failed to measure up to possible stakes cal ¬ ibre have been backward in de ¬ velopment or slightly injured and so the May 2 deadline for payment may be passed But a large number are still considered potential champions and will be confirmed with a 100 fee before Thursday midnight Sometimes a merited payment is neglected as was the case last year with Sullys Trail who seemed a certain winner had she been kept eligible eligibleWe We have quizzed Don Smith and Eddie Read of Del Mar during their recent visit here The Futurity comes of age Sept 7 this year when it has its 10th runnirig said Don and Eddie It has grown remark ¬ ably in prestige as well as value this fall it will gross about 70000 Del Mar has adopted a policy of long range promotion of the two juvenile fixtures they keep plugging them the year round Got out a hand ¬ some brochure on them this year mailed to 1000 probable nominators The track brass believes in one single date for nominating yearlings and for making eligibility payments and this year it is May 2 which enables the Del Mar Keeneland and Saratoga sales yearlings to be listed as nominees for the Del Mar fixtures The angle has caught the fancy of some of the countrys largest market breedersin Kentucky and Virginia as well as in California CaliforniaFilms Films Again Support Stewards Decision DecisionSomething Something of a furore was created when the San Francisco press took the stewards mildly to task for refusing to allow the claim of foul lodged by Rene Cruzat aboard Rumbo against Pibe Carlitos and Eddie Schmidt the onetwo horses in the 100000 Kyne Handicap The press boys wrote without seeing the photo patrol pictures It was another case of the eye being easily deceived for we scrutinized the movies Tuesday along with several other persons all of whom agreed that the stewards acted wisely in permitting the numbers to stand standFact Fact is that the race was remarkable in that it was so cleanly run considering the size of the field and that no less than 11 horses were grouped close together phalanxlike in the homestretch at the eighth pole Ordinarily the horses are straggled at the end of the first mile but in the Kyne they were bunched almost throughout Every horse had clear racing room nearly all the way excepting Holandes n the oddson fa ¬ vorite who was behind the wall of horses in the home lane and could not find a path through and Rumbo who was momentarily pinched at midstretch when Ed ¬ die Schmidt went out and Pibe Carlitos came in How ¬ ever they caromed off immediately leaving Rumbo a clear field Cruzat continued whipping a clear indi ¬ cation he felt his horse Jiad racing room for jockeys always pull up when the interference is severe severeCount Count Chic closed very fast weaving his way from behind and through horses to reach a position near the rail at the finish Pibe Carlitos was on the far outside throughout and must have run fully eight lengths farther than the horses on the rail We thought Hol ¬ andes n would have been right there and possibly have won had Willie Shoemaker taken him wider in the stretch Willie had him wide but not wide enough to permit free sailing outside that wall of 11 horses horsesSteve Steve ODonnell on Official Visit VisitSteve Steve ODonnell racing secretary at Longacres here for a week signing up stables for the Seattle track Steve was one of the nations top riders for many years Miss Boynton Laguna Secas office secretary phoned to say that Frank and Connie Bishop had re ¬ turned from their Caribbean cruise and are in Ken ¬ tucky for the Derby They were much interested in the 40 or more foals at the ranch and especially in the colt by Khaled and out of Madea Miss Boynton said Bill Raetzman is breeding nearly a 100 mares here this season including the 25 home mares she added addedLuis Luis Elortondo manager of one of Argentinas greatest breeding farms here for a visit from his temporary quarters in Inglewood The senor flew five horses up from Buenos Aires to Hollywood Park three weeks ago They blazed a new air trail from Pampas l ldto dto California for heretofore all aerial shipments to the U S A have come via Brazil and Florida The Elortondo planes schedule called for 35 hours B A to L A with stops for refueling at Salta in northern Argentina another pause in southern Peru we muffed the name then Gabor Blanco in northern Peru Pan ¬ ama Tapachula and Mazatlan in Mexico with the final and longest hop from there to L A AElortondo Elortondo informs that he hopes to bring a plane ¬ load of horses up annually We wish to select a few firstclass horses from my own and my fathers stables Continued 0jt Page Fourteen 54 Jojrq I o rjs i CALIFORNIA CALIFORNIABy By KENT COCHRAN Continued from Page Six and perhaps xound out the lot with a pur ¬ chase or two from friends he said We would race them and sell them in Cali ¬ fornia The man speaks English fluently he was with Horatio Luros stable in the States for some months several years ago His best horse is the fouryearold filly Yauca winner of the Premio Clasico Cria dores over the grass at San Ysidro in which she defeated Alexandra and Esta cion Estacion
