olero U Outsprints Youthful Foes Downs Nisht Amool in Jamaica Stretch StretchChoquette Choquette Pilots McKnight Favorite to Fourth Score Wine Jr Holds for Third ThirdBy By BOB HORWOOD HORWOODJAMAICA JAMAICA L I N Y May 1 Taking command in midstretch J L McKnights Bolero U went on to win todays 45th run ¬ ning of the 17075 Youthful Stakes by a length and a half over Alexander J Os trikers Nisht Amool triumphing with con ¬ siderable authority though appearing to tire at the finish of the five furlongs It was six lengths back to Everett Lowrances Wine Jr who set the pace to the stretch while Joe W Browns Leadstealer was two more lengths out of the money Mill River Stables State Express winner of his two previous starts and a strong third choice to Bolero U and Nisht Amool finished fifth after breaking in front frontJohn John Choquette who was completing a double rode Bolero V who rewarded his many supporters in the crowd of 24171 with a 450 return The son of Bolero Big Lu by Challedon required lQOY5 for the five furlongs on a deep dead but offi ¬ cially fast track Bred by Clarence Hartwick HartwickBolero Bolero U a chestnut colt bred by Clar ¬ ence Hartwick who also bred and raced the courageous Sickles Image was scoring his fourth victory in seven starts and the 11625 he earned today less 175 in fees brought his net earnings to 28250 Owner McKnight a professional horseman from Ireland also trains the colt though he was in the care of W R Mitchell for his pre ¬ vious six races in Florida including his world record victory in the Gulfstream Park Juvenile Stakes McKnights previous best horse was the brilliant and consistent sprinter Agrarian U UAfter After breaking through the gate before the start nearly always a fatal gesture State Express broke in front at the start of the Youthful but was quickly passed by Wine Jr Nisht Amool and Bolero U Wine Jr a gray invader from Lincoln Downs was two lengths in the van at the far turn while Nisht Amool and Bolero U raced as a team behind him with the favorite on the rail several lengths before State Ex ¬ press who was followed by Ace Cheval Leadstealer and Wilson at this stage stageWine Wine Jr continued to lead around the turns and into the stretch where Nisht Amool and Bolero U attacked together They quickly surged past the pacemaker but Nisht Amool began to bear in on Bolero U as they f ought for the lead and after the race Eddie Arcaro said he felt that his number probably would have come down had he won but that there was nothing he could do to prevent it Once he shook free of Nisht Amool Bolero U went on to win by daylight with Choquette shak ¬ ing his stick beside his head headAfter After the race McKnight who has a sentimental fondness for the colt who brought him out of semiretirement said he would now go to Garden State for the Cherry Hill Stakes on May 22 22McKnight McKnight also said that Bolero U nicked himself slightly while in close quarters in the stretch but was sure that the injury was not serious The veteran was also pre ¬ sented with a trophy by Mrs E E Robbins owner of last Saturdays Excelsior winner Midafternoon MidafternoonA A ew minutes after he was informed that he would not be able to ride Gallant Man in the Kentucky Derby by reason of a 10day suspension jockey Johnny Cho quette put up a Derby ride to win the Prospect Park Purse here on Ellis Farms Flying Bird The Quibu gelding reached the end of the mile and onesixteenth a length and a half before Mrs Jan Burkes Son of Erin who led Brookmeade Stables First Aid by a neck while it was 20 lengths back to John M Schiff s Muguet II a con ¬ verted jumper who was doing some run ¬ ning at the end despite the distance he was beaten Flying Bird paid 760
