Connors Corner By Chuck Connors Paddock Gang Is Opposed to Trial Races Say Such Events Seldom Prove Anything Young Conditioners Have Much to Learn LearnJAMAICA JAMAICA L I N Y May 1 The Paddock Gang met this morning and by an overwhelming voice vote went on record against so called trial races for im ¬ portant stakes or handicaps t decided later in the week The elder members of the gang in dis ¬ cussing such races pointed out that in the first place they do not mean anything and secondlyTnore often than not the popular choice is defeated Starters in the im ¬ portant stakes and handicaps are presumed fit and ready for such engagements and thus are not in need of a trial event to attain top form Present day trainers have been compared to those of past generations but when it comes to sending a horse to the post following a winters respite or layoff the younger generation has something to learn learnRacing Racing enthusiasts of today are better informed than those of the past for statistics of all kinds train ¬ ing trials conditions and past performances are readily available To these starting gate education is also added and thus no avenue of information is overlooked The older generation of the training ranks today includes many men whohave mastered the knack of sending a horse postward for his seasonal Tlebut in perfect condi ¬ tion This has been demonstrated on many occasions and today horses good and bad are raced on a year round basis There are a few exceptions to this rule but with the heavily endowed races offered by winter tracks in many instances they top the awards of sum ¬ mer racing the cream of the stakes and handicap divi ¬ sions can be found at winter grounds groundsWinter Winter Campaigners Brought New Trend TrendWinter Winter racing in Florida and California presents an array of 100 granders This is real important money and horses that parade postward are fit and ready They in addition to past races are trained for such events Some of these starters are brought to peak form in a series of overnight races while others due to the condition of such races or other factors such as dis ¬ tance and previous earnings are not eligible These are the ones that are honed for the test and training plays an important part The dates of big races are known well in advance and trainers in pointing for such events allow plenty of time to be ready The trials lor such horses as drawn up in the overnight condi ¬ tion book permit plenty of leeway on the part of a trainer and his charge and in the majority of occasions are far from true and not convincing Hence in the opinion of the membership of the Paddock Gang they should be abandoned abandonedTrainer Trainer Joe Nash who has horses in training here arid at Garden State stated that he
