Florida House Committee Approves Harness Bill BillRecommends Recommends Measure Calling For Trot Track in Miami Area AreaSpecial Special to Daily Racing Form FormTALLAHASSEE TALLAHASSEE Fla May 1 The Flor ¬ ida House of Representatives Public Amusements Committee has voted 43 to recommend passage of a bill that would permit the construction of a night harness racing track in Broward County in the Miami area areaThe The vote was taken over the strong ob ¬ jections of former Sen P B Gautier of Miami who claimed the area is up to the hilt in parimutuel establishments establishmentsRep Rep A J Jack Musselman author of the bill said it provided for a referendum vote and final approval would also have to be given by the state racing commission commissionGautier Gautier who was appearing before the committee as a representative of the Dania jaialai fronton said There are five dog tracks three jaialai frontons and three running flat tracks in a threercounty area Dade Broward and Palm Beach and we are up to the hilt in parimutuel establishments Rep Cliff Herrell of Miami Springs voted against the bill and claimed it would have an adverse effect on state revenue He noted the bill would allow the proposed harness racing track to run at night in direct competition with the established dog tracks tracksRep Rep Harry Westberry of Jacksonville a supporter of the bill countered with the argument that there never was a time when somebody was up here for a bill for a new running race track that the other groups were not in here to oppose it itReps Reps James Sweeney of Deland and Nathan I Weistein of St Augustine joined Herrell in voting against the bill billIn In other action the committee agreed by a unanimous vote to accept a bill by Her ¬ rell that would make it a misdemeanor for an undesirable person to return to a race track after being ejected from the plant and before being reinstated by the racing commission commissionThe The bill would also give the racing com ¬ mission the power to subpoena witnesses and records to hearings hearingsIn In another action the committee voted to approve a bill that would limit the ben ¬ eficiaries of charity days at race tracks and jaialai frontons to the 100mile radius of the plant It would repeal the old law which required that 25 per cent of the re ¬ ceipts be turned over to the University of Miami MiamiA A bill that would allow the greyhound racing season to open on Nqvember 1 in ¬ stead of the present November 15 date was also looked upon with favor in the com ¬ mittee The bill would prevent an over ¬ lap of dates but would not increase the total number of days in the dog racing season The season now closes on May 31
